1. When and where was the story written or told? What historical, social, or cultural background might be needed to understand or explain what the story is about?
The story seemed to be told during a war or rebellion of some sort, in a high end barber shop, in the middle of some kind of town. To me, the town seemed smallish, not a big city with skyscrapers. However the town must be important with such an obviously important general there. It is possible that the story took place some years ago, evident from the old fashioned razor and barber shop, as well as the cruel methods of teaching a lesson to the public. However not too long ago, for Torres had possessed a gun holster, meaning guns had been invented and small enough to be holstered. The narrator had described Torres as having dark skin, though still able to be burned enough to turn red. Because of this, it is possible that the story took place in something like the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, which would be around the right time. Knowing the setting can help add depth to the story, as well as a background story if you know the setting. The “lather” part implies some kind of cleanliness going on in the story. However, the “just” and “that’s all” imply that there was something else that could have been done. If you really look, you can see that the title implies some kind of choice being made in the story, which can suggest the theme of the story, with the barber making the choice between killing Torres or not. However, if you can not find the theme in the title, it can also be seen that the title can imply that a cleaning practice happens in the story, like somebody going to a barber, which can imply a
