In the beginning of the story they are at a funeral. Isabel , a slave was told by Miss Mary Finch there previous owner in Rhode Island told them they were free.Her brother sold Isabel and her sister Ruth to a mean and rich owner named Elihu Lockton and Anne Lockton but she made them call her Madam.After Madam has bought Isabel and her sister they sail to New York.They were in New York and Madam refused to move and says “we cannot leave without my chest (Anderson 32).When they got to the hous Ruth giggled and Madam asked who made the noise, Isabel tells her that she made the noise and Madma slaps her In the face and almost knocks her to the ground. I was surprised that Madam had slapped Isabel in the face really hard.
I don’t really understand “the part where Madam says “we cannot leave without my chest.”I’m not sure what it means or what it is trying to say.I wonder why Madam says that she can’t leave without her chest.I want to know more of what she is trying to say.
