Plot Summary And Symbolism In 'Leroy'

Leroy Selfish but kind, is how I would characterize Leroy. Hardly ever paid attention to his wife before his accident. After his accident, he started to notice how his wife, Norma jean goes through the day of her daily life. He starts noticing the little things his wife does, like putting her house slipper on precisely at nine o’clock, stares off into a corner while cutting onions. Even though he is almost healed from the accident, he is still frightened to drive a vehicle. He feels like he is not the breadwinner in his marriage anymore and cannot provide anything for his wife. The reason I would say he is selfish is because his wife suggest him to find a job that a man would do, like carpentry and guarding job and he refuses to pursue it. Instead he wants to continue sewing, and dreams of building a log cabin that Norma jean does not want him to do. Leroy thinks his marriage is going great, and that his wife will love his presence around all the time. While spending so much time on the couch smoking joints, he learns his wives character that eventually leads him anticipating whether his wife wants to work on their marriage or leave the marriage. He soon understands that his wife wants to leave. Instead of him understand about her decision he tries to talk with her and asks if she will start over and she replies that they have already started over, and that nothing was wrong until her mother caught her smoking. Norma Jean felt like she was still in her younger years, which she despised. Leroy should have been more affectionate towards Norma Jean while he was in a healthy stage, instead of taking everything for granted. Also, he should have listened to his wife about getting a job that would have made them a little more distant, which would have made Norma Jean feel less
