The French and Indian war or Seven Years war was the fifth and final war of what was an extensive struggle with France for North America. There was constant fighting about whom controlled Ohio Valley and much more; the French felt that the rest of the land was theirs. The Virginia government felt that something had to be done about all the French forces, so George Washington was then sent out to protect Virginia’s claims. Washington and his party went and informed the French general to get off of British land, but the French informed him that they planned to take the rest of the land. Washington returns in 1754 to build a fort, but like everything else it was unsuccessful.…

While there were several British (and by extension, American) goals present during the French and Indian War, the primary ones included securing “commercial supremacy” among major European powers, gaining access to the interior of the continent, “cement[ing] its control of settled regions” in North America, and ruining France’s attempts to make use of the Americas. The last is especially important considering the other conflicts between the British and French over the previous eighty years. All of these were to attempt to strengthen the overseas power of the British Empire; as it turned out, this was perhaps the biggest outcome of the struggle. After the Seven Years’ War concluded, the British Empire could “relax” in terms of war, but soon…

The french and indian war, fought between Britain and France during the years 1754-1763, was a response to debate over the Ohio River Valley between the two countries, won by the British in 1763. The effects of the war, rather than improve relations between the colonies and their mother country, worsened them. The conclusion of the french and indian war strained british and colonial relations due to issues of land acquisition such as the proclamation of 1763 and the Quebec act, political changes such as the end of salutary neglect and trivialization of existing colonial government, and economic burdens stemming from mercantilism and heavy taxes placed on the colonies that eventually led to the American revolution. When the Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War, it granted Britain the territory of the Ohio River Valley. The treaty more…

In October of 1859, the raid at Harper’s Ferry, led by John Brown, deepened the split between the North and South due to the brutality and violence used by Brown and his men in order to fight for the equality and freedoms that slaves in America deserved. Throughout 1859 to 1863, views in the North and South started to change as Democratic Southerners viewed all northerners as being solely identified by John Brown while the North split into radical abolitionists, who began to proclaim him as a martyr, and Northern Republicans, who saw the wrong that was present in the raid at Harper’s Ferry. Alongside growing tensions from Abraham Lincoln’s presidential win in 1860, the raid contributes to the start of the Civil War as the South becomes wary…
