The NAACP was the most important organization in the eradication of Jim Crow laws and the eventual guaranteed equality through the law. Charles Hamilton Houston was the brains behind the success of the NAACP. (Elwood, 1990)
CHH was a brilliant African American lawyer. Houston volunteered for duty in World War 1, but served in a segregated division. Even though he was an officer, he wasn’t protected against Jim Crow laws. He was given substandard housing, and even fended off a lynch mob while in France fighting the war. (Elwood, 1990)
This made him realize that he had to fight against the Jim Crow laws. CHH realized that the best way to fight Jim Crow was in the schools via the equal clause sanction.
