When we sin there are consequences attached in the form of punishment. There are two types punishments due to our sin Temporal and Eternal. The Eternal punishment for sin is when a soul is in a state of mortal sin and dies without being forgiven they are eternally dammed to hell. The Temporal punishment for sin is what left after the eternal punishment has been forgiven, it is the time the soul has to undergo purgation to be pure enough to be in the presence of God.
