The last couple of months have been dreadful. It was filled with exhaustion, boredom, false hope, and above all, plenty of freezing. It all started when we left the steamboat that brought Martin and me all the way from Seattle to the Yukon. The second we placed a foot on the ground, stampedes of other prospectors hurried along the harbor, as every moment that they were ahead of the others bought them a bigger chance in hitting it big in the mines. This is what they believed in the beginning, at least. Little did they know that we would all have to trek through what seemed like endless obstacles in order to make it to their desired destination. We heard gunshots and argument erupting every hour, and as precautions, we had to repeatedly delay our expedition, which played on our patience. This was especially relevant when we reached a location called Pleasant Camp, ironically. Since so many people rested there with their equipment unattended before climbing up to Chilkoot pass, many robberies took place, making pleasant camp, not so pleasant. Our next destination was certainly the worst. We loathed the thought of this place ever since we departed from Seattle. It was finally time to climb the Golden Staircase. Not just once, but multiple times, going back and forth. So three of us trekked up the mountain while two of us stayed at the bottom to guard our remaining things. Once we had one pile of supplies at the top of the mountain, one of us waited there to look after all of our belongings as well. We all rotated through this system until we finally placed the last piece

In the mid-1800s, early settlers saw opportunities in moving west to the vast landscape. Willa Cather’s “O Pioneers!” and Bret Harte’s “Luck of Roaring Camp” share the theme of how the pioneers interacted with the land. The authors illustrate the struggling efforts of working together as a family, the challenges of nature’s wrath, and even allow an insight into death among the settlers. Family and friendship was an important part of both stories.…

I consider Camp Kanata a second home, I worked my first full summer as a camp counselor after junior year. That summer was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life; I learned, laughed, and cried everyday, I also created amazing friendships. Yet when asked about what made my summer so spectacular a few months later, I had little to say, my mind was blank. I cannot remember what happened a week ago, let alone what happened months and years ago. The number of special memories and moments I have forgotten about is unquantifiable.…

Nicole Gao Mr.Isley Honors English II - Period 4 October 21, 2015 Narrative Essay On February 19, 1942, just two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. Its tone was carefully neutral: it authorized the War Department to designate “military areas” that excluded people considered to be a danger to the United States. My Opinion on the event is quite unclear to me at the moment. I completely understand that the many refugees and immigrants are absolutely furious with the positions they are in, and most just want help for them and their families. But on the other I hand, I do understand the view of the Authorities side, trying to get a better grip on the immigration. But that also leads me into my next point, I don't agree on how they are trying to deny the entries of many families and people in need. To the main point however, the destruction of part of the camp is where I get most jumbled up.…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
