Playing Third Base: A Character Analysis

Improved Essays
For the last few years of my life, I have been on my school’s PSAL Baseball team playing third base. And, while playing baseball generally requires an abundance of skill in applying critical thinking, one incident during my time with the team stands out to me. It was a sunny spring day in Brooklyn with a gentle breeze picking up the dirt of the field and carrying it off towards the New York high rises around the fields. At the time, our team was undefeated and, since none of the games were close, the thought of losing had never even entered our mind the entire season. That was, until we were the home team during the top of the ninth inning with a one run lead with one out. The other team had managed to load the bases and had its most skilled

From that day on, starting each spring for nine years, I was outside practicing to be the best player I could be. Still to this day, even though I don’t play baseball anymore, nothing comes close to the energy and excitement I get from a baseball diamond because my body becomes full of energy, my mind begins to replay player’s actions and nothing seems to break my mind and focus on winning the game. Walking up to the gate my heart starts beating…

As I walked into the stadium, the smell of hotdogs and popcorn filled the air. It was a familiar setting. A setting I had grown to know very well because my dad loved baseball. The red white and blue colors were everywhere as fans came from every direction into the stadium. My dad and I walked to the outfield where the opposing team was warming up for the game.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

In the game of baseball, catching a ball is an everyday thing and is no big deal to most players, but for others, it creates themselves a legacy. The Right Fielder’s love for the game of baseball is expressed by how he always wanted to play and did not care as much about the position he was playing. Though he wanted to play the game and leave his legacy by doing so, his team never believed in his game. In the story Death of the Right Fielder, by Stuart Dybek, the symbol of the ball found in the mitt of the Right Fielder shows that one must do what they love in order to leave a legacy.…

The game was tied at 7-7 in the last inning with two outs, not an optimum situation for any hitter out on the softball field of a championship game. There were two girls on base, one on second, the other on third. The sound of my metal cleats crushing the dirt filled my ears as I walked up to home plate. I knew I had to be resilient after striking out the time before. The intensity was ubiquitous and I could feel it from everyone around me.…

For as long as I can remember, I have always played as the left fielder in baseball. Playing this position was always easy for me. When I estimated the trajectory of a ball speeding through the air, I could always run to where I thought it would be and catch it. It was as if the outfield became my home, I was comfortable there. One day during practice, my coach told me to try and play as the first baseman.…

Baseball is not the game that you thought it was. It has not been since 1973 when the first designated hitter was used. A designated hitter does not play defense, their one and only job is to hit for the pitcher. It has made the game stray away from its roots. Many say the designated hitter has improved baseball by making it more entertaining but in reality these players are ruining the sanctity of the game because they do not follow the same rules that all of the other players have to follow.…

If there was one thing I was used to by now, it was that whenever something didn’t go well for me on the baseball field, the future holds green pastures only if I go looking for it. So sure enough, after that loss, I set my eyes ahead to the next season. That final season we had a great start, winning a lot of games, but we ended up barely making the playoff as somewhat of an underdog. We didn’t think about anything that was at stake, we simply played our game all the way to the championship game without a loss in the playoffs. We won the first game of he series and were winning for the majority of the second game.…

When our heads are clouded with fear, must of us will struggle to think rationally. In certain circumstances, even professionals struggle to reach a truly justifiable verdict. In the middle of a heated ballgame, umpires and their decisions are easily affected by the pressure and weight being placed on them. “[U]mpires were 13 percent more likely to miss an actual strike in the bottom of the ninth inning of a tie game than in the top of the first inning” (King and Kim). Because the umpires knew the importance of their decision, they were more likely to make mistakes.…
