Playing The Trombone

I first started playing the Trombone when I was four years old, after being taken to countless Jazz concerts by my father and Grandmother. To this day, I still vividly remember those performances, emphatically tapping my foot to the beat while trying to listen to every note played by my Jazz idols, Wynton Marsalis and Wycliffe Gordon. There, at Jazz at Lincoln Center, I was taught a new language, a new way of communication and expression; music. Wanting in every way to emulate those defining musicians, I started to play the Trombone at the 92nd Street Y, becoming their youngest ever brass student. For the first four months of the headache, doctors couldn’t diagnose it, so they gave me a profusion of drugs with debilitating side-effects, and simply told me that I wasn’t allowed to do anything; I couldn't go to camp, be with friends, play sports or XBox, go on my phone, or even listen to music or practice the trombone. This was the first time in my life where I was deprived of all of my passions, therefore, the summer and beginning of the school year was the worst time of my life. However, soon after, once my Neurologists were able to correctly diagnose my headache, I was able to play the trombone again. At once, the world shifted from black and white to color again, and this experience allowed me to appreciate music to another degree. This year in orchestra, instead of solely playing my piece, I often sit back and enjoy the beautiful harmonies created and take the time to admire how well written the songs are.
