After joining her research team, Dra. Rivera aided me in understanding what really implies to carry out an investigation. This arduous process requires an energetic endeavor from the researcher, without leaving behind the rigorous mental demand that can only be rewarded with the gratifying emotion to obtain the desired results. All those research papers one has to scrutinize, and all the TLC’s I had to prepare to make sure the desired product was in fact synthesized, so I could then proceed to purify and characterize it through several sprectroscopic techniques makes for a hard but satisfying task . When I was prepared to be left alone in the lab, a sense of responsability inmediately took over me. I could no longer let others take blame for my mistakes, or not be confident enough about a procedure because this was no longer make-believe. The security of others, not only physical but also professional and econocmic security (because of the reputation and resources of my mentor) were in play, and the urge to excel and never fail began to grow in me. Children of several ages and their family come to this room as a getaway from the hospital environment. It is my duty to provide attention and an amusing atmosphere to these kids, while contemplating and trying to understand what they went through or still face everyday. The same goes with my shadowing experience. I’ve noticed how much empathy is required from the practitioner and how he or she has to be emotionally stable in some cases to be able to deal and professionally assess every patient. These experiences have greatly contributed in my decision to become a doctor. If by helping people in daily trivial situations filled me with some joy, I could not conceive the delight that one experiences as a result of transcendentally affecting the life of a patient via medicine. What better way to enrich my own knowledge and seek to contribute to the latest medical advances, while contemplating the positive effect they have on the welfare of the puerto-rican population? I’m very keen to be the mediator of these benefits, and I feel that the school of medicine would be the perfect platform to achieve
