In Reno v. ACLU, the 1996 Communication Decency Act was challenged for its constitutionality. The Act criminalized the conscious transmission of “obscene or indecent” information, in order to protect minors from unsuitable internet content. Their responsibility is to not prevent the expression of any ideas, as is protected by the first amendment, but to restrict “indecent material” so as to prevent children from exposure to it. The FCC is a force to protect the freedom of speech and ensure that ideas can be shared. This government commission is what can exist in peacetime, unlike the wartime government suppression of the Fu-Go bombings. Limited censorship can be crucial for the protection of the population in times of war, but anything but the most limited form of censorship, such as a ban on indecent material from being broadcasted between six am and 10 pm so as to prevent its exposure to children, is fundamentally un-American.…

Censorship, defined as the “suppression of ideas and information that certain persons— individuals, groups or government officials—find objectionable or dangerous,” by the American Library Association, occurs every day. Many people think of censorship as a tool utilized by governments to control their citizens, but it occurs much more frequently than that. What people never realize is that the everyday scrutiny and judgement that we place on each other and our ideas is just as if not more harmful than government censorship. We do not suppress these behaviors out of malice, but out of true concern for the wellbeing of our society. We worry that exposure to adult topics will tarnish the purity of our children, or that the freedom to proclaim our beliefs will somehow affect the rights of others.…

In “Teens, Nude Photos and the Law”, published February 2009, Dahlia Lithwick, a law graduate from Stanford University addresses law enforcers, members of the justice system and parents on the court cases about teenagers prosecuted for sending and receiving nudes. Because of the new trend of “sexting”, teenagers send each other nudes. Since the teens in the nudes are underage, the nudes categorize as child pornography. Therefore, teens caught sending and in possession of nudes are punished for the distribution and possession of child pornography and labeled as sex offenders. Lithwick disagrees with the verdicts and argues that child pornography laws should not be used against the people they were made to protect.…

A complicated word isn't it, ‘censorship’. It comes from the Latin word ‘censere’ which means to give as one's opinion, something nonexistent in an Anthem society. Like many things, a world without censorship can be scary, but a world with too much of it, is a world with no meaning. Look at Anthem, the people who live in that society have no meaning, no life, no importance. Although many people can't imagine comparing the United States to an Anthem society, I believe the United States is an Anthem society because America has huge amounts of censorship when it comes to the press.…

Case study 5-D presented by Patterson & Wilkins (2014, p.129) is concerned with the use of children’s images in a political anti-same-sex-marriage advertisement and the privacy concerns the usage brought up. The case study raises various questions surrounding framing images or video to support an agenda and how the privacy of children is affected by political advertisements. Many people could view the use of children to support a political agenda, with out of context imagery, is emotionally manipulative. The images of these children should not have been used in an anti-same-sex-marriage advertisement since the children are a vulnerable audience and the advertisement purposely used and edited images that fit their propaganda. Micro Issues…
