Play Review: Karin Magaldi's Sons Of The Prophet

On May 18th, 2017 I went to see Sons of the Prophet performed at Portland State University’s 55 Theater in Lincoln Hall. Sons of the Prophet was written by Stephen Karam and directed by Karin Magaldi and the cast consisted of ten characters. In this analysis, I will be writing about two actors, two costumes, stage space and the use of lighting. Amity Hanson played the role of Gloria, a bubbly and rich book publisher. Her outfit was meant to represent a business professional woman, something I believe costume designer Bruce Keller really carried out. Gloria’s outfits changed a couple of times during the performance, her first outfit was a matching shirt and skirt that was key lime colored with a black blazer, stockings, and black heels. Her accessories consisted of glasses, a black dangly necklace, black heels, and large earrings. She often would cross her legs when she sat showing manners. But when she arrived at Joseph’s house she took her shoes off, put her legs on the couch and helped herself to a couple of glasses of wine. Gloria’s character was a very pushy middle-aged woman and often did not know when to stop talking or prying at people to disclose more or to make them feel bad for her. She represented a character that I believe everyone has that one person in their life she could relate to.
