He never said anything about not teaching the youth to think on their own instead he did it out. He might of failed but I think it shows that he is more alert on keeping his dignity. Socrates knew that his ideas would keep him and the others surviving along with the youth. They would not fear as in what they believe is right, even if in the same situation as Socrates. He could see who the accuser really was and realized that he was not there for the wellbeing of the youth at all. Meletius had an idea that Socrates would take defence and was more interested into ending Socrates. When hearing this by Meletus many parents of the children who were taught by Socrates were convinced that he need to be killed even if this was a true statement. Socrates did not exactly deny that he was teaching the youth to think along the line of the right and the wrong rather than by the strict lines of law. Many of the parents believed it would be a better idea to kill him then to have their children be the martyrs in the future.
When he denies of being an atheist. which probably won the support of many juror. It was clear he used to defend by explaining the face by believing in divine agencies. Which had divine creator, this should have won. In my opinion this should have won because Socrates was convinced of conviction and still stood there saying thing along the line
