For example, Adolf Hitler kept Machiavelli's novel The Prince, by his bed and used it as inspiration to rule Germany. Machiavelli believes that you need people to love and fear you as a leader. Throughout the book, Machiavelli uses leaders of his time, like Cesare Borgia and King Louis XII, as examples of what a person should or should not do in order to maintain or improve his state. In the written work “The Prince” by Niccolo Machiavelli the author elaborates on how a prince can only be a strong leader if he engages in duplicity. Machiavelli focused on a more realistic and immoral strategy to keep the people of his time unified, realpolitik a system based on practical rather than moral considerations. The author, Niccolo Machiavelli, goes through great depths to explain why it takes rulers who are “cruel, dishonest, duplicitous, and manipulative.” There are many great examples to prove his ideology, however, the writing is very subjective and bias as Machiavelli does not give a rebuttal to the different kinds of ruling. Thus, another reason why many leaders abuse their power is because they think that they have to be cruel in order to stand and prevail in brutal battles for power. This is particularly true when we reference to the long history of corruption in European Monarchs. Mary I of England was cruel, deceptive, forceful, and carried out many things by coercion. Similarly, Ivan the Terrible of Russia did not care, and did not need to care for the well-being of his people.…
