Plasticized Film Analysis

The “Plasticized” video is a chilling reminder of how we take for granted the convenience of single use plastics. Who would have thought that thousands of miles off shore you would find tiny “nurdles” or virgin plastic floating in the ocean? I honestly did not even know that this is what virgin plastic was termed. I had no idea that you could drag the surface of the ocean in the middle of no-where and find this stuff floating. I thought the documentary was well done and it surprised me that thirteen people were actually on that small vessel. The documentary included a wide variety of people/professions all related to the cause. The trek did not look easy and their commitment to the cause was definitely displayed in how they handle mishaps and

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

A common theme presented in these sections is the almost unfair treatment of women. Specifically, France, M 'an Tine, Susana, and Faye, seemed to survive their struggles but also came away with a scar. In the movie Chocolat, there is a close relationship between the little girl named France and the worker named Protee.…

Mixing Fantasy and History in El Laberinto del Fuano “El Laberinto del Fuano” is a film by Guillermo Del Toro that combines fantasy with reality. Set in post-civil war Spain, the film follows the story of Ofelia, a young girl obsessed with fairy stories, who is told by a faun that she is in reality the Princess Moana of the underworld, and must complete three tasks in order to return to her kingdom. The use of fantasy in the film does not trivialise the historical standpoint, but rather emphasises it by representing recognisable figures during the war as fantastical creatures, as well as through the increasing violence of the film. Arguably, the use of fantasy does overshadow the historical standpoint in the final scene by portraying new hope and erasing the nationalist presence; whereas in reality, Spain would continue to be marked by the Nationalist regime for many years to come. To begin with, the fantastical characters increasingly appear to reflect actors in the civil war.…

The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside…

Konner does this through the form of a animal documentary, characterizing the plastic bag as an living creature throughout the mockumentary. He further exaggerates his point by personifying the plastic bag as "unsure of itself" through a close up shot as it gets blown by the wind across a car park. This portrays the fact that humans leave their rusbish carelessly and that it can not clean up after itself. Additionally, Konner uses long shot to demonstrate the plastic bag flowing towards the ocean. Through this, viewers can see that the humans standing in the scene did not care or glance at the plastic which describes the way we act about our environment.…

While doing a good job of presenting the information and engaging the audience it seems to lack purpose in guiding the viewer in a particular direction. Advocating the value and cultural relevance of traditional film processes and detailing an emerging cultural relevance in the new medium is all well and fine, for first year film students or film review critics but has little overt relevance to the everyday workplace or personal environment. The documentary does excel in raising awareness of these communicative mediums. Detailing the process and the personal effort that goes into creating films is certainly an informative and subject-worthy effort. Giving me a reason to ‘care’ remains the…
