In the United States, Americans use 50 billion plastic bottles a year. To put that in perspective, Americans consume about 1500 plastic water bottles per second. That is way too much to be using just to use something to drink out of. The United States has some of the safest drinking water in the world, so why do we need to have bottled water that claims to be “purified” or from some springs? The answer is we don’t. In Austin, Texas we have already banned plastic bags so what will it be if we just cut out plastic water bottles as well. Filling up one bottle of water at your house using the tap water versus buying a plastic water bottle at the corner store is a huge difference in cost for little to none better quality of water in it. In our society people are always complain that they don’t have enough money to make do in their lives, so why would the people of Austin be mad or against the conversion to banning water bottles? Also the production of one water bottle uses energy that omits toxins into the air. Almost eighty percent of the plastic water bottles we use end up in our landfills and release toxins into the earth as they decompose. Another reason Austin should ban water bottles from being used because they are not necessary. People don’t need plastic water bottles every time they want to drink water. People can simply just have a reusable water bottle and you can save many bottles. If people just carry around a reusable water bottle pretty much everywhere in the public has water fountains where you can fill it up so you don’t have to go through tons of plastic water bottles.
