Civil War battlefield surgery, surgeons, and nurses were more common on the battlefield during the war because of the severity of the injuries and sickness from disease. Civil War battlefield surgery came to be known as butchery, though it saved many lives of soldiers and helped them possibly get back on the battlefield. The most common surgery that surgeons performed was amputations. Most deaths didn’t occur because of the amputation itself but because of the “surgical fevers,” which usually developed during the septic state of surgery. This quotation demonstrates the effect that war tends to have on some people. The constant fear, boredom and stress of being in the trenches affects the soldiers psychologically and when they lose their composure, they go mad. This also demonstrates that soldiers tend to be unstable as they witness gruesome things on a daily basis. There were several difficulties facing the soldiers such as realizing that war is different than anticipated, the way they were trained didn 't reflect the war they were fighting, and their training didn 't provide them with defense against newly emerging technology. The soldiers believed that they would be fighting a face to face war that had swift victories, but the reality was digging trenches and fighting from great distances. The men were faced with the horrors of trench life with medical issues such as Gangrene also known as Trench Foot and the after effects of chemical warfare. War surgeons soon discovered that the best way to stop deadly infections was to chop off the infected area quickly. Trench warfare involved soldiers on both sides digging massive trenches in the ground resulting in a military stalemate. Soldiers would wait and when the chance presented itself, they would climb out of the trench to the opposing side. This was a suicide mission as “anyone who stands up is a target immediately struck down” by machine guns, marking the “shattered land, [the so called] no man’s land” impassable.
