As the first person in my family to have the opportunity to attend college, I will value the opportunity to attend your school because I know how important education is in opening doors. I am already on my journey there because I am accelerating high school requirements a semester early to focus on college classes and internship. My school, HSHMC, has a unique relationship with Sharp Hospital, so we, students can intern. I have been interning since freshman year, so I have an idea of what it’s like to be a nurse. My journey first began when I decided to attend The University of Iowa in the fall of 2013 after graduating from Urbandale High School. I attended Iowa for 2 years and then when it came time to choose where I would apply to nursing school at I was stuck between wanting to continue on at Iowa’s College of Nursing, pending on my acceptance, but also needing a change in my life. I decided to choose change and Mercy College of Health Sciences presented an opportunity for just that. There is a program offered at Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCOHS) that was too good for me to pass up. My current focus has been on achieving my BSN and the program I had heard about was fairly new but provided an opportunity for me to get my BSN while doing it in only 2 short years.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

To be honest, even though I still don’t know, I pray it will be a blessing to others. To begin with at the age of thirteen (13), my brother injured his knee by trying to jump over guardrails. He ran back to the house with his knee cut to the bone.…

To be specific, I would like to be a cosmetic surgeon. However, it is not only the aspect of being able to mold bodies into the patient's goal: I want to explore what makes their surgery meaningful, at least in the context of their life. Patients could easily be someone who wants liposuction for aesthetic purposes or a patient in remission who wants to remove traces of the disease. My point is: both are equally meaningful and would probably raise the quality of their lives. Nevertheless, I want to know more about the aspects of mental health that will let me differentiate someone who would benefit from a procedure versus someone who would benefit from therapy for their body perception.…

I believe that my admission to the KU School of Nursing would contribute to this philosophy in many ways. I was raised in a community where a Hispanic woman, like myself, was not expected to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. The expectations for minorities are not set as high, which is unbelievable and also very sad. There is hope for minorities like me and I believe that my admission into your school would show my community as well as many patients that minorities can have a successful career and anybody can rise beyond where they were raised. I graduated from high school with honors, as well as with a full-ride scholarship to college.…
