Plastic Debris Affecting Our Oceans

“...the volume of plastic debris going into the world’s oceans could more than double by 2025, assuming current trends in coastal development and plastic use.” (Tibbets, 1). Plastic pollution is an ongoing issue that has affected our oceans for a long time. We produce numerous amounts of plastics everyday in order to fulfill our consumer based society. Because of that, we are dealing with the results of our actions. The overproduction and wastefulness of plastic have caused our oceans to be polluted by plastic and the chemicals that come along with it, which in turn causes the marine life to die; because recycling is done improperly, researchers need to find ways to make plastic biodegradable or improve the recycling methods. In 2010 there was thought to be roughly between 4.8-12.7 million metric tons of plastic byproduct in the ocean, which “...is the same as five five-gallon bags filled with mixed plastic on every foot of coastline around the world.” (Tibbetts, 2). But he is not necessarily trying to say that all of this plastic is on the coasts, or this would be getting much more attention. “Slightly more than half of all plastic is negatively buoyant, meaning that it will sink upon reaching the ocean, either into the near-shore sediment environment or to the ocean floor,” stated by Anna-Marie Cook (Seltenrich, 3). The plastic could possibly degrade at the ocean floor, but there is no way of cleaning it up. The plastic, which is almost invisible after it degrades, could be exposing harsh chemicals to the marine life (Relative pronoun). Even if it does degrade the chemicals in the plastic will contaminate the ocean. So why don’t we just recycle this …show more content…
But that doesn’t mean we cannot find a way to keep the plastic from going into the ocean or landfills. Considering plastic is killing marine life, which is a food source for us, we need to find a way to make this plastic safe for the environment when it is disposed. Or the better solution is to recycle the plastic in a more efficient way in order to get out what we started with. Plastic pollution is an issue that is the consequence for the overproduction of plastic. This has altered our oceans greatly and we need to stop the overproduction of plastic and end the waste issue. Plastic pollution causes several deaths of marine life, extensive amounts of damage to the ocean, and loss of a food source for people

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

Marine debris can degrade marine habitats, endanger marine and coastal wildlife and pose threats to human health and safely. Scientists and explorers believe that the best way to accrue the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is to limit or eliminate the use of disposable plastics and increase the use of biodegradable resources in human’s everyday life. Since the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country’s coastline, no nation takes the responsibility or provides the funding to clean it up.…

When someone throws a plastic wrapper out the car window, or down the sewer drain, does it ever occur to them where that trash goes? According to litteritcostsyou.org, 1.9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean each year. Plastic is polluting Earth at a disturbing rate; humans are essentially killing themselves and killing everything else that surrounds them off this planet due to prolonged littering. What most people don’t know, is that litter such as plastic bags and cigarette butts, do not dissolve or disintegrate, or at least within a human’s lifetime. Marine life and other animals that live near bodies of water consume the trash humans carelessly dispose, which kills them due to choking and other hazardous effects from trash consumption.…

Marcus Eriksen and his colleagues explain in a 2014 article Plastic Pollution in the World 's Oceans, that there is an estimate of 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing about 269,000 tons are floating in the world 's oceans. Also, according to Renee Cho in the 2011 article Our Oceans: A Plastic Soup, Cho states that an average amount of time for a plastic water bottle to decompose is around 450 years . Those fishes and other marine animals will be around the plastic waste for years before it decays or when someone removes it from the ocean. Surfrider and Rise above Plastic states that they strive for the best so that each and every sea creature can have a safe environment to live in and the way for that to be accomplished are to have decreased the amount of plastic in the…

I believe we should have more organizations to help deal with this problem. This is a growing problem with the ocean’s becoming full of discarded trash. It is estimated that there is about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic and other pieces of trash floating around the top of the ocean. Researchers estimated that about ten percent of garbage goes into the ocean every year. This is a major problem that needs to be controlled somehow.…

In the article "Choking the Oceans With Plastic” by Charles Moore explains the existing pollution in our ocean and how different states in the United States are implementing new laws and regulations in their city to reduce pollution going into the ocean. California was mentioned and has been on structural controls, such as covering gutters and catch basins with screens. Moore also includes that many activists around the world are lobbying to ban such plastic materials for our goods. Moore then adds that the city of California has implemented a ban on throwaway plastic materials; he states, “In California, nearly 100 municipalities have passed ordinances banning throwaway plastic bags and the Senate is considering a statewide ban.” (Moore 1)…

One trip to the beach and it’s not difficult to find pollution littering the sand or far out in the waters. This waste from land results in marine debris: trash or other waste that enters the ocean. According to the U.S. Department of State, “Marine debris – trash and other solid material that enters the ocean – threatens wildlife and marine habitats and presents health and safety concerns for humans” (“Marine Pollution.”). Not only is trash harmful to all living organisms, but it has one of the highest counts of items in the ocean, just falling behind cigarettes/cigarette filters (“What Is Marine Litter?”). Plastics within the ocean decompose into small pieces due to sunlight, oxidation, and being ripped apart by the waves.…

Plastic bags make it so much easier to carry our groceries as compared to paper bags. Plastic wrappers do not stick to the food product and can be disposed of without taking up much. Utensils made of plastics make cleaning up easier, because they can just be thrown away. All of these luxuries have come from the invention of using plastics to make disposables, but such disposable items are not disposable in the sense that they are hard to break down. Thus, the “luxuries” actually made me realize the dangers of overusing plastics, leading me to look into the environment and how humans are harming the environment outside of plastic…
