Abstract:
Problem Statement and Purpose: The current study was designed to determine the plantar pressure values and norms in feet of healthy Greek colleagues of a technological institute and to examine possible correlations between demographic data and potential foot disorders as a result of gait strategy.
Approach: 300 adults colleagues (150 women, 150 men; mean age 21 years) who were found to have healthy foot according to the AOFAS (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) clinical rating system for the ankle and foot participated in the study. Mean and maximal plantar pressures in three areas of tarsometatarsal joint were recorded during gait using a Mini-Emed pedobarographic equipment.
Results: The mean and maximal pressures recorded in the middle range of the mid-stance phase of the gait cycle were higher compared to other two regions (medial/lateral). Footprints also revealed four different patterns of pressure with this of middle-foot type

These measurements of plantar pressure provide information about biomechanics of foot, ankle function during gait and indication of potential musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. The pressure distribution underneath the foot is affected by several factors such as the anatomical structure of the foot, body mass, gender and joint range of motion (Bennett & Duplock, 1993; Kellis,

Is this really true? In an article by Quinn, she states, “if treating foot pain was as simple as going barefoot, more podiatrists would recommend this simple solution” (1). As many people as there are for running shoeless, there are still many who completely disagree with it. An article by Hosny mentions Dr. Lesley Wolff, a foot and ankle surgeon, who said, “The repetitive pounding on the ground without protection, I think, is ridiculous” (2).…

The function of the Achilles tendon is to raise the heel off the ground when walking (plantar flexion of the foot) and also assists in knee flexion. The body depends on the Achilles tendon while walking, running, jumping, any time the legs have to support bodyweight. Depending on the activity, the Achilles tendon can be subject to up to 3-12 times a person’s body weight. While walking, the tendon receives a load of stress about 4 times the body weight, and 7.7 times the body weight while…

I should have listened to my mom. When I was in third grade, a funky fungus called plantar wart grew on my foot. A plantar wart is a fungus that grows on the bottom of feet, caused from friction and pressure. My mom drove me to the doctor’s office several times to freeze the wart off. Once the wart disappeared, it left a small hole in the ball of my foot; I was told to wear a band-aid with a sock over my foot at all times.…

For example the average running shoe your foot sits on an incline of 10-13 millimeters. This in itself could be the sole reason for running injuries as your foot in place in a shoe in an unnatural position, a little exaggerate but the same concept think of the foot in a high heel this is how the foot is in the average running shoes just not that much of an incline. If an ultra-runner has poor running techniques running barefooted, they will correct themselves naturally as the idea behind this is that they will be in pain if they don’t, and as a result the chance of getting injured will be greatly…

Additionally, a talar tilt test done by the physiotherapist recorded the right ankle as 22º and the left affected as 16°. The player also demonstrated pain, reduced ROM and increased joint laxity; this would suggest a positive test because a talar tilt of more than 5°c compared to the unaffected ankle indicates instability in the ligaments (Gaebler et al., 1997). A talar tilt test had been done because it is more specific for detecting injury to the CFL (Rasmussen,…

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) has a chain effect on the lower extremity muscles and not exclusive to the ankle muscles. The hip abductors is found to be weak in people with LAS1. A study was done on soccer players found that players with weak hip abductors are more prone to LAS than players with strong hip abductores2. Lateral ankle sprain is caused by an inversion beyond the normal limit of the joint or when the peroneal muscles unable to restraint momentum induced by the inversion action. From such a mechanism, the peroneal muscle ether play a role in preventing LAS or it is the most affected muscle by such an injury type3.…

While bracing and taping significantly decreases the amount of ankle injuries, it also increases the amount of knee injuries because of a lack of range of motion that the athlete is used to having in the ankle. From the results of their tests, they found that when wearing an ankle brace, or tape makes no difference, but to instead use personal preference (Hopper, McNair, Elliott…

From early in my childhood, every toy and electronic device in our house was a target for creative ‘re-construction’, holding each piece up with a probing ‘why’. As I grew older, ‘why’ became a need to fix, build and reconceptualize and so the path toward medicine was a natural progression. Years later, my facscination in podiatry emerged through formal and informal study; recognizing a medical universality about the specific region of the foot and ankle. In incorporating a range of specialties to include Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management, few areas of medicine seemed so encompassing. A personal turning point was the realization that mobility is what defined the very notion of functional independence.…

Although I started pursuing a career as a Foot Health Professional at the age of nineteen (19), I knew without a doubt in my mind that I wanted to further my knowledge and career in the field of Podiatry. Becoming a podiatrist is an opportunity that not only adds a new scope of treatment for patients in my country Grenada but also to establish Podiatry into a field of specialty. The alarming rate of amputations occurring amongst high risk patients resulting from poor treatment and lack of proper education in foot health is a testimony to need for such a specialty here at home. Interestingly, the death of my paternal grandmother, which resulted from diabetes related complications, was the source of my inspiration to pursue a career in Podiatry. Before her death, she was diagnosed with gangrene, which led to a double amputation of her lower limbs.…
