In today’s society, we tend to put labels on things that are against our views, one of those things being Planned Parenthood. There are many different opinions on what Planned Parenthood does and doesn’t do for the citizens of America. Some people believe Planned Parenthood to be “Orwellian” and others believe it to be an advantageous source for society. One of the services Planned Parenthood provides Americans with is cancer screening. “If Planned Parenthood is defunded, American women (and men) will miss out on more than 650,000 cancer prevention and screening services” (McNally). According to those facts almost one million Americans benefit from the cancer screening Planned Parenthood provides; therefore, the discontinuance of these …show more content…

Republican House members argued “There should be no loophole that would allow abortion providers to have access (to funding)” (Carr). Despite the republicans efforts many Planned Parenthood clinics can find loopholes to allow them to perform an abortion without be reprimanded. In 2014 alone “323,999 abortions were performed” (Strickland). These abortions aren’t just for careless people who get pregnant, but they are also for women who have been raped, women who physically can’t handle childbirth, teenage girls who aren’t ready to become mothers yet, and women who are mentally incapable of taking care of a child during pregnancy of after pregnancy. Republicans want to “ban abortions after 20 weeks” (Dias). Denying people the right to the many basic health needs that Planned Parenthood provides because of one dispute over the right to abortion is inhumane and unconstitutional. First, one of the main arguments for closing down the organization is that the centers are too dangerous for women. One politician states that women and children are ‘recklessly murdered’ when they go in for an abortion, and backs up this statement with the fact that a handful of women have died in the past twelve months (Perkins 2). Out of the numerous services that Planned Parenthood offers the public, only three percent of all of their procedures are abortions; meaning that ninety-seven percent of everything they do is basic health care and other medical services. Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood, lists the statistics in her article, Today, We Fight Back, “every year, 2.7 million people come through the doors of our health centers, a million people participate in our sex education programs, and 60 million people get health information and other resources from us online.” Since the Republicans who drafted this bill often focus on abortion, they completely ignore all of the good that Planned Parenthood does for the community. Getting into doctor’s offices can be incredibly long and hard process, as documented in Cecile Richards’ article; she talks about a woman that she met who, after her husband lost his job, lost their health insurance. After finding a lump on her breast, she only found two clinics that would take her on as a patient, but they had two-month long waiting lists, so she went to Planned Parenthood.…

By preventing Planned Parenthood from receiving federal money, it means people with government funded health care cannot use it for the services provided at the clinics. Many people do not know the exact statistics of the services Planned Parenthood provide, and because of that they may have skewed ideas of the clinic. Without federal funding Planned Parenthood patients who use government provided health care would have to pay for all of the services of the clinic out of their own pocket (Bassett). For people with private health care, this would not be an issue, but for others who lack the money to pay for private health care, they may be in trouble. Planned Parenthood has said that two-thirds of their patients are “low-income and have no other primary health care provider” (Bassett).…
