As a way to do more in the community, I volunteered with Planned Parenthood in their community efforts to engage a wider audience through their voter registration drive. First I contacted Grace Miller, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas’ Austin Community Outreach Specialist, to be a part of their upcoming events. I volunteered to head the Planned Parenthood table for the Foundation Communities Health Fair and 2 Mile Walk event on November 5th. Prior to the community event, I needed to meet with Grace and collect the pick up the Planned Parenthood Tabling supplies. This included a table, a number of informative brochures, event freebies (sunglasses, stickers, pens etc.) our voter registration sign-up sheets, information on upcoming organization events and

Other participants in the health fair were Community Care, El Buen Samaritano and Foundation Communities. Despite the rain and cold weather there were around 40 people participating at the event, the majority of whom lived at Spring Terrace apartments. Before the event’s two mile walk participants came up the table to ask about services provided by Planned Parenthood and to grab some freebies. Most of the event’s participants lived in affordable Foundation Communities housing such as Spring Terrace and relied heavily on low cost services and benefits in the community Moreover, some of them came up to me offering their support for Planned Parenthood and went on to tell me how important low cost health care access has been significant in their lives. One of the men in attendance talked about how Planned Parenthood is important to community health and that he himself benefited from one of the STI testing drives offered by the organization. Soon afterwards, I was able to provide outreach information to a woman who knew many communities members who wanted to be more involved in Planned Parenthood’s
