Dating back to October 16, 1916, Margaret Sanger and her sister, Ethel Byrne, along with friend, Fania Mindell, opened the worlds first birth control clinic in New York. Soon after, the three were arrested and accused of distributing indecent materials to women. In 1938, the clinic became the American Birth Control League, and by 1941 it had over 200 operating centers and approximately 50,000 clients. Many found the operation’s name obscene, and changed it to what we all know it now as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The PPFA was initially a safe-way clinic for underprivileged immigrant women to gain insight on contraception guidance.
