Planned Parenthood Case Study

Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides reproductive health services. Each year, around 2.7 million women and men visit these health centers, providing them with contraceptives, advice on family planning, services like STI testings, cancer screening and so much more. The organization has received federal funding ever since 1970, but pro-life activists have been trying to petition federal and state governments to defund Planned Parenthood, arguing that the organization is killing many lives with the abortion services it provides to women. But in many cases, abortion is the only choice women have because they can not afford to provide a good life for the baby.

To protect her family from being persecuted and to protect her profession, Kaylene’s last name is withheld. From her soft grey hair to her sneaker-clad feet she exudes a motherly aura and speaks with a touch of a Midwestern accent. One would never think that in order for her to go into work she has to walk through a group of shouting protestors that call her a “baby killer” or that quite a few family members have deserted her. The challenges she faces are not new, the stigma surrounding Planned Parenthood has been there for a very long time.…

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state will defund the Planned Parenthood through the Medicaid program. The Health and Human Services of Texas informed the organization of its decision via a letter. The letter to the Planned Parenthood notified it of a series of health violations, that could potentially lead to spread of infectious diseases, as the undercover videos released by Center For Medical Progress (CFMP) showed the fetal body parts handled by the staff and buyers without mandatory precautions. It expressed concern that the clinics were "liable, directly or by affiliation, for a series of serious Medicaid program violations."…

Planned Parenthood should not lose any funding or be shut down. Despite recent abortion controversies, Planned Parenthood should not be held responsible for pro-abortion advocates. The organization is pro-choice, and intends to give the choice back to the people in order to allow them to choose a better life for themselves. If Planned Parenthood loses its funding or gets shut down, people everywhere, but especially low-income families, will be put in a difficult standing in affordable health care and wellness. Furthermore, shutting down Planned Parenthood would put many people at a greater health risk than they have now, and worst yet, it will not end abortion.…

I've spent most of the weekend out on the streets marching, and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts while they're still fresh. cw: anti-fascist propaganda, me mansplaining, white supremacy in politicized feminism, incoherent rambling Friday, I joined my comrades in taking the streets for #ResistFromDayOne protests, and it was beautiful. Rather than applauding the lies and empty promises of self-interested politicians at the inauguration (even / especially in a hypothetical Clinton victory), it was a decentralized movement, a coming together of indigenous activists, socialists, anti-fascists, BLM, anti-capitalists, and young people. It was a beautiful display of unity, comradary, public art, dissent, and of the will of the people to move beyond our broken political system to make the…

By preventing Planned Parenthood from receiving federal money, it means people with government funded health care cannot use it for the services provided at the clinics. Many people do not know the exact statistics of the services Planned Parenthood provide, and because of that they may have skewed ideas of the clinic. Without federal funding Planned Parenthood patients who use government provided health care would have to pay for all of the services of the clinic out of their own pocket (Bassett). For people with private health care, this would not be an issue, but for others who lack the money to pay for private health care, they may be in trouble. Planned Parenthood has said that two-thirds of their patients are “low-income and have no other primary health care provider” (Bassett).…

Women’s rights has been an issue in the United States since the early 1800’s and until all people are comfortable discussing the fact that in many parts of the world, women have no say in what they can do with their bodies or how it’s treated. A woman should be the only one who can decide what is best for her body. There is only so much that women can do when the one place that helps women with checkups and abortion based questions, Planned Parenthood, is being defunded or closed down. “The House of Representatives is expected to pass a budget reconciliation bill that guts the Affordable Care Act, pulls roughly $450 million in federal assistance from Planned Parenthood and prevents Medicaid recipients from getting reimbursed…
