The non-program related costs amounted to $7.3 million from 2013-2014.4 An average of nearly $14 thousand was spent per day for travel, property, and galas.4 Congress reasoned that if Planned Parenthood has the funds to maintain all of these expenditures unrelated to their mission, the government, and in turn the taxpayers, have no need to fund them.
Continuing to fund Planned Parenthood would allow it to continue providing its services. In the last fiscal year, Planned Parenthood provided over 10 million individual services to men, women, and teenagers in the United States. 2.7 million Americans are served by Planned Parenthood. Defunding Planned Parenthood would greatly reduce the number of Americans who can use Planned Parenthood, especially since nearly 45% of the costs which the organization faces are covered by the government funds it receives.4
The majority of the people who use the services of Planned Parenthood are those who would otherwise be unable to obtain services from even the Affordable Care Act, due to being in locations where the ability to even sign up for these services is nearly impossible. Many Planned Parenthood locations are near low income neighborhoods where the residents in the area are unable to sign up for healthcare services. Many teenagers who have had no proper education in sexual health, are able to either go to a Planned Parenthood location to learn everything that they need to know, or are able to use their Chat/Text program to have any of their questions immediately answered. The same program also helps in emergency situations and they have a large staff devoted to answering all of the questions presented.
