The Federal government had many different approaches towards the Plain Indians. The government used treaties, relentless attacks using the Army, and forced surrender of Indians from their lands. The government enacted policies which were met to confine Indians to reservations and even transported some to reservation like the one in the Washington Territory. The government enacted things like the Dawes Act, an act which broke up the land of nearly all tribes into smaller portions, with the remainder being auctioned off to whites. The government tried to persuade or force some Indian tribes to surrender
