Plain Truth Quotes

I have read pages one through one hundred seventy-seven of Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. In this book a baby is found dead in an Amish barn. An unmarried Amish teen is accused of giving birth and killing the baby. She is facing murder charges and must convince society that she did not kill the baby and it was not hers. In this journal, I will be characterizing Katie and questioning who the father and killer of the baby is.

G: In this journal, Katie can be characterized as dedicated and mysterious. Y: (transition) dedicated R: She goes to all the church services R: She visits her brother monthly R: She admits to sins she did not commit Y: (transition) mysterious R: She is accused of having a baby and killing it R: She sees her sister’s

First off, Katie is dedicated. The first example of Katie being dedicated is that she does not miss a service. As the text states, “I don’t think Katie should be going to church today. Aaron set down his mug. Of course she’ll go to church” (Picoult 66). This quote shows that Katie is a dedicated woman who attends every church service. She goes to all the services to show her respect for the Lord. Another example of Katie being dedicated is that she visits her brother once a month. As the novel explains, “Once a month she goes to State College on a train” (Picoult 126). Hearing this, one can infer that Katie is dedicated to her brother. Even after her brother was shunned away from the family because he continued his studies Katie still visited him in secret. The last reason why Katie is dedicated is that Katie admits to sins she did not commit. As the text says, “I don’t want to be right, or strong, or first. I just want to be part of them again, as soon as I can” (Picoult 167). As Katie explained, she just wants to blend into society as soon as possible, even if that means admitting to a sin you did not commit. Katie is dedicated to her religion. One does not stand up for themself if the bishop has accused you of a sin; one just does their confession and tries to blend in as soon as possible. Secondly, Katie is mysterious. The first example of Katie being mysterious is that she was accused of having a …show more content…
First off, who is the father of the baby? I think that Adam is the father of the baby. The first reason why I think that Adam is the father of the baby is because Katie is alone with Adam. As the text states, “…that he’d left Katie in the house while he went off to class…in the house that he was subletting from a guy who delayed his research expedition not once, but three times” (Picoult 164). This shows that Katie was left alone multiple times with Adam. He had several opportunities to take advantage of her during those times. He also delayed his research travels, meaning he might have wanted to stay back with Katie. The second reason why I think that Adam is the father of the baby is because Katie would sneak away to see her brother Jacob at State College. Katie might have told herself that she was going to visit Jacob, but she knew that who she actually wanted to see was Adam. Adam made Katie feel like a regular girl, a feeling she’d never felt before. The last reason why I think that Adam is the father is Katie believes his studies about ghosts. As the novel states, “You think I’m making this up. I don’t—” (Picoult 112). After Adam realized that Katie believed him, he probably felt a better connection to her. There were probably not a numerous amount of people who believed Adam about his studies, so when he found Katie who believed him he was shocked. Adam and Katie were

While watching Rory Sutherland’s TED talk there was one quote that stood out the most, “We need to spend more time appreciating what already exists, and less time agonizing over what else we can do...to make new things familiar and familiar things new.” My interpretation of the quote is that new changes will become familiar in time and they remain new to everyone who does not know or understand the circumstance. We spend so much time trying to stay away from change that when new ideas or situations appear we rather stay with the old than increase our knowledge. However, we still need to learn to appreciate things that already exist before creating new things. The example that Sutherland used in his TED talk was funny yet very interesting, he…

Mandela might be rebellious but at the same time he proves to be a chivalrous man. When I first started reading the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, I was confused about the family history and dynamic. With time, I began to understand the importance that something seemed cursed about 124, a name they gave their family house. It was also originally difficult for me to comprehend which character did what. For example, when Morrison writes, “124 was spiteful. Full of a baby’s venom” (Morrison, 1), it was unclear whether the word “baby’s” was referring to a baby, or to a recently dead grandmother, Baby Sugg.…

Getting to know someone involves spending time with the desired new person, talking to them, and/or observing how their actions. It would be somewhat difficult to learn about their character without those factors. We learn about characters in books in just about the same way we learn about them in the real world, by interacting with them in some manner. The difference between reality and books, though, is the middle man between the reader and the characters, the narrator. The narrator gives us everything we know about the characters, and sometimes their selves depending on the type of narrator.…
