First off, Katie is dedicated. The first example of Katie being dedicated is that she does not miss a service. As the text states, “I don’t think Katie should be going to church today. Aaron set down his mug. Of course she’ll go to church” (Picoult 66). This quote shows that Katie is a dedicated woman who attends every church service. She goes to all the services to show her respect for the Lord. Another example of Katie being dedicated is that she visits her brother once a month. As the novel explains, “Once a month she goes to State College on a train” (Picoult 126). Hearing this, one can infer that Katie is dedicated to her brother. Even after her brother was shunned away from the family because he continued his studies Katie still visited him in secret. The last reason why Katie is dedicated is that Katie admits to sins she did not commit. As the text says, “I don’t want to be right, or strong, or first. I just want to be part of them again, as soon as I can” (Picoult 167). First off, who is the father of the baby? I think that Adam is the father of the baby. The first reason why I think that Adam is the father of the baby is because Katie is alone with Adam. As the text states, “…that he’d left Katie in the house while he went off to class…in the house that he was subletting from a guy who delayed his research expedition not once, but three times” (Picoult 164). This shows that Katie was left alone multiple times with Adam. He had several opportunities to take advantage of her during those times. He also delayed his research travels, meaning he might have wanted to stay back with Katie. The second reason why I think that Adam is the father of the baby is because Katie would sneak away to see her brother Jacob at State College. Katie might have told herself that she was going to visit Jacob, but she knew that who she actually wanted to see was Adam. Adam made Katie feel like a regular girl, a feeling she’d never felt before. The last reason why I think that Adam is the father is Katie believes his studies about ghosts. As the novel states, “You think I’m making this up. I don’t—” (Picoult 112). After Adam realized that Katie believed him, he probably felt a better connection to her. There were probably not a numerous amount of people who believed Adam about his studies, so when he found Katie who believed him he was shocked. Adam and Katie were
