In literature, islands physically separate the protagonists from British society and offer a temporary indulgence in childish behaviour. In the case of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, Wendy, Michael and John rid themselves of societal constraints. Yet in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons, John, Roger, Susan and Titty do not entirely forgo the traditional conduct of children. They indulge their imaginations but do not fully accept the pretend as they do in Neverland. Although Wild Cat Island is not populated, the frequent visitors influence the Walkers to reinstate of a secondary class structure.…

Wild Things is a song about nonconformity and accepting yourself and the path you choose. The title itself likely references the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, which could mean that she is saying that her and her friends are “different” like the creatures in the book. Alessia says “So aye, we brought our drum and this is how we dance” in the pre-chorus. This line is a spin on the common phrase “dance to the beat of your own drum”. Many other lines also establish the idea of following your own path in life.…

This week’s reading was a brief overview of the historical foundation for the views on wilderness of the early pioneers of North America and how these views on wilderness have shaped American opinion on wilderness. The early American settlers’ view had a strong historical precedent. Early Humans’ values were geared toward survival so things that were useful to them were deemed “Good” and things that were a challenge to their survival were “Bad”. As time went on humans were able to control certain limited aspects of nature, such as raising crops, and the control of or dominion over wilderness was became good. Even as civilizations advanced to the level of the Greeks and Romans humans continued to demonize wilderness and associate…

In today’s society, humans have many expectations to live up to, to be considered as a decent human being. In the story “Lord of the Flies”, the representation of childhood shapes the meaning of the work in many ways that change the story dramatically. The story is about a group of kid’s crash landing on an island and having to live on it. Most of the boys in the story are 13 years or younger making them not completely mature yet. There are many examples on how these boys being younger effect how the story is written. First, one of the main parts of the story is about how they think there is a beast on the island and that it is trying to kill them.…

Once again, Gemma Burgess made me connect with a character that I didn’t think I’d have a lot in common with. I think the title, The Wild One kind of threw me for a loop and I was expecting something else. Fortunately The Wild One turned out to be an incredibly sweet and heartwarming story about figuring out what makes you happy in life and going for it. While Coco is the protagonist of The Wild One, we actually get updates on how the other girls like Pia and Angie are doing as they all still live together.…

In Michael Pollan’s “An Animal’s Place” Pollan provides an argument on whether or not Americans should consume animals, and specifically, if the fashion in which animals are farmed and slaughtered respects their capacity to suffer. Pollan illustrates his personal dilemma particularly when he ironically points his debate on whether or not to eat meat began while he was dining at a steakhouse. To develop his argument, Pollan initially exclusively uses the citation of animal rights activists, but then gradually cites experts that support his conclusion that Americans eat animals as long as the principle behind it is correct, and animals are treated with respect. He asserts to accomplish respecting animals that Americans need to regain their contact…
