Recently I was tasked with the assignment of going to a place of worship to experience another style different then the type of church I go to . I attend Rollins Church of Christ in Longview, Texas where the pastor is Reverend Ricky Lawler. We are a small place of worship which holds usually 85 to 100 people on Sunday Service. We had the option to choose to go to a Catholic church or Charismatic church. On November 5th, 2014 a fellow classmate and I decided to attend Wednesday night service at Houston Faith Church, a non-denominational Charismatic church, in Houston Texas. The church leaders there are Pastor Chas and Joni Stevenson. I didn 't exactly know what to expect from the service but I kind of had an idea. In the past when I would hear about Charismatic churches …show more content…
Both of the worship models are revivalist and we both have a band playing music before the pastor comes out. We both have communion every Sunday morning and both of our pastors reference different verses when preaching. Now there are also some differences as you would expect. Houston Faith Church dedicated at least five minutes to people meeting and greeting after the band singing. Also they called upon anyone who had a bad back and needed healing to come to the front of the church so they could pray for them. I watched uncertain of what was going to happen. Pastor Chas testified to praying for a man who used a walker and said that bit by bit the guy had got stronger through the service and began to walk better. He referred to how Jesus would heal people of leprosy and blindness and then tell them to show what had been done. The most obvious difference between the two churches is that they speak in tongues. At first I thought I would be spooked by how they praise but in actuality and didn 't bother me at all. Seeing people become overwhelmed by the Spirit was something I needed to

Calvary Commission, the seminary that I stayed at, is located a few miles out of town on a land that seems to never end. I could walk miles and still find myself to be on Calvary Commission’s property. The first day I was there, my group and I went on a little hike up to the prayer chapel, which sat on the top of a hill, surrounded by trees, and a bonfire pit stood a few feet away. This was my group’s first real exposure to how great the people at Calvary Commission are.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

I definitely felt a connection with the members because we all shared similar views. There was nothing truly different in our beliefs. The pastor was very relatable in his examples. He made sure he used experiences people understand and related it to the passages in the bible. To answer my initial question, a non-denominational church does have differences when compared to a Haitian Baptist church.…

I feel that I learned more about how even though she is a pastor that she still may have trouble in seeing eye to eye in things. I don’t think that it was how she conducted her services, but more on how she used her insight from those confiding in her to preach to the congregation. So that not only can the brother/Sister to others who may be going do the same thing but don’t feel as comfortable speaking about it. I know that if I decide to return to her church I must enter with all ears and eyes open, to better comprehend everything during service.
