Pivotal Moments In Lord Of The Flies

One pivotal moment in the fiction novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, occurs towards the end of the story’s procession when one the protagonist’s friends gets killed. In the early chapters of the book, you learn that a plane full of schoolboys crashes on an island. Without adults ordering them around, the boys of ages 6-12 joyfully spend their days playing at their free will. They select the protagonist, Ralph, to be the chief because he called them all to a meeting by blowing into a conch shell him and Piggy found earlier on. Soon enough, however, scary stories of a beast living on the island, a struggle for power, a realization that they will not be saved, and a thirst for blood makes all the boys go insane. Roger, one of the older boys who wants to prove that he has unlimited power and is unstoppable, rolls a large boulder towards Piggy. The beast is an imaginary creature that they all fear, but Simon is the only one that knows that there is no beast, except for the evil power that is contained inside each one of them. I think that although this moment was very impactful on Ralph, the death of Piggy struck him more so. Piggy and Ralph had grown a close and strong bond throughout the novel. Both deaths, however, illustrate a few vicious aspects of humans. Simon’s death describes how it is amongst human nature to fear the things that they do not understand. The so-called beast was actually just a victim of the world war occurring at this time, for he parachuted out of his plane and was shot on the way down.
