Pivotal Moment In My Life

Improved Essays
I was born in Iraq and was forced to leave the country at the age of nine. Suddenly, this night was shattered by my mother's cries. I was jarred from my sleep and sprung from my bed to find her hurriedly packing. My family and my home were being threatened to be razed by a bomb. As we left, my parents could not take their eyes off the home that we would never see again. I was strangled with grief, anguish, and uncertainty. These defining moments have been forever etched into my heart. This pivotal night is responsible for shaping me into the person I am today. We fled in the middle of the night leaving all our possessions behind and never looked back. My family and I spent the next four years in the county of Jordan, where we waited anxiously

Rationale: This written task relates to the memoir A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah, and in particular, is a diary by Lieutenant Jabati, Ishmael’s commanding officer during his time as a child solider in Sierra Leone. The diary describes events that occur during this timeframe while expanding on Jabati’s feelings and thoughts. I chose a diary because I felt it could best illustrate how Ishmael was viewed by his peers as a child soldier while elaborating on the gruesomeness of the war and how it affects people’s thoughts.…

As I have previously written on Black Elk Speaks Journal 1, this story relates to the life I lived and experienced back in my home country, Iraq. Of course both stories are set in different time lines and different events, yet they still are similar. As soon as Chapter 9 starts, Black Elk begins talking about his come country and how the soldiers came there to kill them. There was a reason for the soldiers to go out there and attempt to eliminate an entire tribe and that was because of land, money and material goods. Growing during the war in 2003 back in Iraq was quite similar to the wars and battles the Natives had went through, fortunately my story is not as gruesome as it is to many others that did not survive the war.…

Part I: Describe a “key moment” in your educational experience as a student that impacted you significantly in your life. An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. The school I attended only had one music teacher who taught every grade. Since I had always received an “A” in music class I assumed I had a reasonable singing voice.…

A bitter and disgusted soldier stationed in Iraq from ‘03 to ‘04 writes his family back home to describe the rather uncomfortable conditions he is living in. He uses a variety of imagery, analogies, metaphors, and hyberboles to help them better understand what his life is like overseas. The soldier uses analogies to portray the lack of resources in Iraq. He tells his family to pack everything they would need for a 4 months - without Wal-mart. Knowing that Wal-mart is a common source back home, the soldier leads the reader to picture a life without the convenience or luxury of a grocery store.…

As an Iraqi national and an American citizen, I possess a unique perspective when contrasting the two countries. Growing up in Iraq I experienced and witnessed different forms of oppression and injustice. At the age of four, my childhood was stipped from me. My father was threatened, my neighbor was kidnapped and killed, and a missile hit my elementary school during class periods. Life in America might not be perfect, but I’m grateful and thankful to be living in such a wonderful country.…

It’s amazing how people go on with the process of living while watching the news of locations like Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, and how they are right in middle of a war zone. Mothers run across bullet-riddled streets to get necessities such as food while children play between the crumbled remains of empty buildings due to enemy bombings. With gunfire and sirens as their reality, life seems to go on for those living in war-torn countries. Children living in sadistic environments in parts of the world experience the destruction of their homes, the death of parents, family members and friends. The realities shown by the mass media is one side of the story as the other is a story that results in hope.…

A summer home, my favorite playground, and the smell of the jasmine flowers in a busy city. Each of these represents a meaningful and powerful symbol of my childhood that I lost as a result of the Syrian Revolution. While I have spent many of my teen years struggling with what the conflict has taken from me, it was not until I volunteered at a Syrian refugee school in Turkey that I truly began to understand the suffering, destruction of life, and loss of opportunity that the conflict has caused. This experience pushed me to look beyond myself and my local community in order to develop a more global perspective.…

Introduction Persuasive speech is that which is “about communicating through both your verbal and non-verbal channels in a way that purposely changes someone’s attitudes and behaviour” (Kuhnke, 2011). One form in which the act of persuading can be seen and purposely change someone’s attitude is through powerful speeches like for example Angelina Jolie’s speech that she delivered at an United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday 24th April 2015 . Although the speech was short, for around 8 minutes, it was captivating and persuasive urging the audience and those listening around the world not to take the topic of refugees lightly; she raised awareness on this crisis in Syria specifically. Convincing through the rhetorical devices used,…

An artifact is an object that has monetary and/or sentimental value. My artifact is coins that my family and I brought from Jordan. Even though the coins have monetary value, for me the sentimental value outweighs the monetary value. They are pretty important to me and my family because they remind me of the cruel world in the Middle East during that time. After a while, I have collected a lot of coins and paper money from different countries that I have visited, but the most meaningful coins in my collection are the Jordanian coins.…

My defining moment was probably one of the many times I had entertained the idea of falling in love. The thought of expressing it, turned it into a whole different story. What I thought could happen, the difference I could make with a glance, a smile, with just being alive. Truthfully, I have never been the most emotional person. Being raised in a family where the only two emotions were happy and mad, I have always viewed all other emotions as a sign of weakness.…
