Pity For The Wild: Three Grotesques

Pity for the Wild: Three Grotesques, written by Tennessee Williams and directed here at the University of Florida by Tiza Garland and Dr. Ralf Remshardt. In this production, we were given three different scenes with three different sets of actors. The scene designer Carl L. Sage seemed to have worked hard on the first scene but lacked creativity for lights and images on the second scene. Also, the directors Tiza Garland and Dr. Ralf Remshardt made smart casting choices, especially with Grace Abele who played Polly. Sage the scene designer seemed to not put much thought in the second scene. While Abele really owned the character, making easy to watch her every movie. All the actors seemed very professional and owned the characters they were playing. There was just something about Abele that caught my eye. For instance, every time Brittany Caldwell (Molly in The Gnädiges Fräulein) asked Abele to rock with her in the rocking chair she did not hesitate and went overboard. She exaggerated the movement and moaning to an extent that made you laugh because she was not scared to make a fool of herself. In addition, she had her own excerpt in the begging of the scene that really set the tone. Every time the Cocaloonies interrupted her you were able to tell the frustration in her face and the way she looked at them in annoyance due to the continuous stopping. Abele used her face and body to enhance ever word that came out of her mouth and it was amazing to witness. Overall, the production of Pity for the Wild: Three Grotesques was an experience I will not forget. Sage did a wonderful job with the design in Something Unspoken, making it known that this was the past with every detail. He did lack on showcasing the future in The Chalky White Substance and did take advantage of the backdrop. Furthermore, the directors casted very well trained actors, especially Grace Abele. She made The Gnädiges Fräulein worth watching and had you wondering what her next move was. The production was very entertaining and a joy to

Throughout our lives we constantly find ourselves submerge in a social hierarchy amongst our peers which severs constant reminder of what is considered socially acceptable and what is not. The 1978 film Animal House, directed by John Landis, spins the social hierarchy of a college campus on its head for a flare of humor, but not without a serious subelement. In the scene where Eric”Otter” Stratton(Tim Matheson) and Donald “Boon” Schoenstein(Peter Riegert) take insult to ROTC officer, Doug Neidermeyer(Mark Metcalf) brutally hazing their fraternity pledge, Kent Dorfman(Stephen Furst) only to then start to embark in a game of golf to hit Niedermeyer and the horse he’s mounted on (19:44-22:21). In which Landis uses the film techniques, a low-angle…

Refried Elvis is a swiftly paced parody that packs a Presley punch. With familiar tunes and modern jokes, it’s fun for the whole family. From beginning to end it’s as smart as it is funny, and guaranteed to entertain. I found the acting to be nearly impeccable, as all on stage seemed entirely committed to their characters, actions, and intent. No matter how serious or silly the scene, I found the believability to be there.…

There are many differences between the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and the 1999 film, The Haunting, directed by Jan de Bont. The main characters in the film are, Lili Taylor as the timid Eleanor Vance, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the beautiful, frisky Theodora, Owen Wilson as the deceiving Luke Sanderson, and last but not least, Liam Neeson as Dr. Marrow (Montague in the book). Many argue that this movie barely follows with the book at all. Lisa Schwarzbaum, writer for Entertainment Weekly believes that the movie is just awful. Roger Ebert, writer for the Chicago Tribune believes “The story is a mess,” but also states: “To my surprise I find myself recommending ‘The Haunting.’”…

I like to say their pacing was very correct and right on time with each other’s lines. It was very believable. Both of their facial expressions were very impressive and easy to catch without showing exaggeration. Especially, I liked the acting of Myrtle Mae and how she made her facial expression. When Myrtle Mae needed to show surprise or embarrassment, it was really cute and wasn’t effusive at all.…

In The Moral Function of Distortion in Southern Grotesque the author, Delma Presley, explains how different authors express their grotesque works. By using different analogies, Presley explains each author which makes it more intelligible to the reader. “Flannery O’ Connor’s point is that grotesque literature exists because writers are faced with the reality that they live in an age whose distortions function as indicators of how far man has drifted from his true image as a creature of God…” (Presley 39). Authors such as O’ Connor, Faulkner, and Sweat wanted to show the truth about the South with a twist.…

The pity here is aimed towards the young girl who had to watch what took place. Moreover, the last two sentences read, “You don’t see the blood, which is probably trickling behind his ear and down the back of his neck. The way his head is twisted away from the door, the twist of the head gives you only a partial profile and it’s the wrong side, it’s not the side where he was hit” reinforces the fact that the author, husband, and the reader are all craving more detail and gore. Building upon that,…

All of the performers brought something to their characters, made them tangible and relatable. From the way the young bachelor flirted with the single sister at Scrooge’s nephew’s Christmas party to the way the Ghost of Christmas Past constantly moved her hands as if she were conducting the story, each actor brought some sort of nuance to their character that made them memorable. They all were very good about making their lines understandable, although I wasn’t a big fan of Mrs. Dilber, Scrooge’s housekeeper’s, accent it seemed too forced and made everything she said seem like a joke. I did love the way that the cast included young children. They were absolutely adorable and had the audience wrapped from the moment they first walked on…

12a) The literary technique that is being used in the passage is foreshadowing to give the reader some idea of what is going to happen. The reader can sense that Miss Amelia’s ex-husband is an antagonist, “...he was the former husband of Miss Amelia, a terrible character who returned after a long term in the penitentiary...then went his way again” This quote portrays Miss Amelia’s husband as a horrible ex-husband who left without notice and implies that he may be later come back in the story. This shakes the reader’s feelings with curiosity and suspense indirectly signifying he will later come back in the story.…

Perhaps one of the most emotionally appealing themes a writer can utilize is that of the social outcast endeavoring to find its place in the world, a theme utilized to great effect by both Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre despite their character’s different fates, the former featuring a supposedly monstrous creation who is ultimately rejected wholly by society and the latter an orphan child who is eventually able to carve an admittedly precarious foothold as a governess. Within this broad theme, there are also certain parallels within the particulars of the plot, mostly between the characters of Jane Eyre and the Creature. First, one can point to the initial disownment of both Eyre and the Creature by their supposed…
