Billy started off as only a part-time player, but was soon known for his speed and by 1887, made a regular right fielder. Sadly, an injury limited his games to about 50. For his 1888 season, he was sold to the Pittsburgh Allegheny’s team. This was his first whole season he had ever played. The crowds of fans in Pittsburgh took to his ability on the field, therefore creating a large fan base. He was named the team captain of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys unfortunately with a bad season, the team could not afford him and he was therefore sold to the Philadelphia Phillies, whom he played a total of 31
