Imagine watching a film adaption of a movie, then ask yourself, do you ever read the book version? Sometimes they could be contrastive due to the different perspectives of the author and the director. Like Edgar Allan Poe, the enigmatic author of the 1800s published “the Pitt and the Pendulum” in 1842 to illustrate the darkness of death. While the director, Roger Corman, released his film adaption of the book in 1961, over a century later, to express its similarity to Poe’s original work. However, the change in the plot, setting, theme, and characters in the adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pitt and the Pendulum” makes it not artistically valid.

The narrator being the only character gave Poe the freedom to concentrate the book on his perspective and feeling. However, in the film having seven characters meant seven different perspective and objectives to focus on. For instance, Francis was investigating his sister’s death, while Nicholas was overcoming the loss of his wife, and Elizabeth was planning her revenge against Nicholas. It could be seen that this would increase the drama in the film, and led to change of the theme. The theme of the immortality of death and the inexorable passage of time could be seen through the narrator fainting and recovering in a different room, each time defeating time and his death. Moreover, despite all the trials of his captors the narrator is finally saved by the French General Lasalle (Poe, 20). However, the increase in character changed the theme to betrayal that could be seen through the generations in the Medina family. Not only was Sebastian Medina a victim of betrayal, so was his son, Nicholas (Corman, 1961). These men ended up betraying their family changing the theme of the original Poe storyline The three major differences between Poe’s “The Pitt and the Pendulum” and its film adaption includes the plot, setting, character, and theme. The distinct difference between the characters could be seen through the setting of the castle vs. the prison cell. The change in lifestyle from wealthy to poor foreshadows the person’s personality, eventually changing the plot from enigmatic to unforeseen. Therefore, “The Pitt and the Pendulum” film adaption by Corman is not artistically valid due to different
