Pitfalls Of Ishtar

Decent Essays
Ok, I think this is a possible comparison. I can see some pitfalls but also some potention. Don't think of the Queen of Night as a woman. She is a goddess (note her owl feet). But it is true that she is called Queen. This could be either the goddess Ishtar (Queen of Heaven) or her sister Eshkagal (Goddess of the Underworld). If you do take this as a sculpture of Ishtar, then you could can tie it into the fact she was the protector or "ruler" of the city of Uruk. Then you would make stronger connections between this sculpture and Nerfitit as rulers over territories.

Here is one of her myths: http://www.sacred-texts.com/ane/ishtar.htm

The statue, a hollow-cast bronze, is fully frontal with a ridged and stiff posture (Ridgway 1967: 46). The left foot is taking a step forward, but both feet are firmly planted on the ground. The chest is square and bulky, yet the features, such as the abdominal muscles and the pectoral muscles are barely defined because of a lack of modeling with the “omission of digitations or ribs” (Ridgway 1967: 50). The statue is in the nude, like archaic kouros are. The face is angular with high copper brows and copper lips that are demonstrating the prominent archaic smile.…

For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…

The two sculptures, “Venus of Willendorf” and the Minoan snake goddess, are both similar and different in many aspects. They are both showing their breasts, which is considered to be a symbol of fertility. “Venus of Willendorf” is smaller than the Minoan snake goddess by about 10 inches because it was made to carry around, but the snake goddess wasn’t. They’re both seen as fertility figures, but I find that the snake goddess was seen as more powerful and stands tall, while Venus is more feminine and soft. They both begin the start of women depicted in art and fertility figures.…

Everyday we pass by a work of art and don't even acknowledge its existence. Art is everywhere we go, for example, a statue in a park is a work of art, it’s not only there for decorations. It has a purpose for being at that particular location, with hope that someone may notice it. Having the opportunity to learn about previous artworks, one of them really stood out to me from ancient Egypt. When an individual hears Egyptian art they mostly think about mummies, pyramids, or Pharaohs.…

The sculpture Triad of King Mycerinus and Two Goddesses, which resides at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was excavated from The Temple of Mycerinus in Giza and was created between 2548 - 2530 BCE, during the reign of Mycerinus. Made from greywacke, an incredibly coarse, dark sandstone, this sculpture uses variation in texture, incorrect scale, and line to draw attention to King Mycerinus in relation to the two divinities, and thus is an example of royalty as divinity. Overall, this sculpture depicts the goddess of the Hare Nome, the goddess Hathor, and the King Mycerinus (in that order from left to right), all carved from a single block of greywacke. Additionally, this is an example of a high relief sculpture, meaning that the sculpture is…

The sculptures of the Bust of Nefertiti and the Pharaoh Menkaure and his queen Khamernebty II are both represented as full round, however, there are many differences between the two. For example, the Bust of Nefertiti was created during the Armana art period. Where art is noted for its artistic style, which is drastically different from conventional styles of art and centered around the worship of Aten. The Armana period focused more on natural beauty and depicted its art with color and a more realistic face. Overall I saw a lot of differences and similarities between the Old Market Woman, the Aphrodite of Knidos, and the Caryatid. Each of the different sculptures have their own unique style and appearance, however there are quite a few similarities. All 3 of the sculptures are beautifully crafted and made of similar material. The Old market Woman and the Caryatid have on similar styles of clothing. While the Old Market Woman’s clothing is noticeably more disheveled, the style and fit are almost the same.…

The statue is fashioned from marble and stands 3 and a half feet tall. The statue depicts a Gaul man who is laying on his shield as blood pours from the gash in his chest. Hellenistic art is realistic in that his skin appears hard and dry, the muscles appear heavy, his face expresses pain, anguish and despair, which is a common style of the Hellenistic period. They were also very interested and intrigued by pathos and death during this style period. The sculptor depicted this Gallic man with matted hair, a mustache, and a twisted collar which were characteristics of a barbarian, greatly feared and admired, and worthy battle opponents.…

While the definition of beauty states that it is a combination of qualities that pleases the sight, many people believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This means that each individual has their own views towards beauty, especially in the “ideal” beauty. Although beauty is a concept every being has recognized since their beginning of time (i.e. young children can already acknowledge the beauty in flowers), their views and ideas towards it are mostly influenced by their environment and culture. Throughout history, it can be noted that every culture has their own perspective on how they visualize beauty or what exemplifies beauty. However, it may be hard to determine how ancient cultures view beauty as there are a lack of primary sources.…
