The Victorian government in Australia is one of these places. They announced their banning of the breed in the late 90s. Although certain people in the area have already been questioning it because of the other various type of other fighting dogs that have not been banned, but have been“limited”, such as the Japanese Tosas, Argentine Dogo fighting dogs and Brazilian fighting dogs. It’s not very hard to imagine why people are so confused as to the decision of only banning American Pit Bull terriers or Pit Bull terriers. Mr. Muller did some digging and found out the factual numbers do not match the proposal of the imposed ban. From the article “Pit Bull Dogs’ Club Hits Back at Government” Mr. Muller actually quoted that, “In Victoria, one per cent of all dog attacks have been attributed to the Pit Bull terrier.” Mr. Muller even went as far as comparing the decision to a brand named car when he comments, “It's a bit like saying they are banning a particular brand of car in a bid to reduce the road toll.” Although he is right about the government needing to rethink their proposal, it still does not provide a good answer as to why they would ban this particular breed of dog out of all the other known fighting dogs. The government of Victoria going as far as making it illegal to buy a Pit Bull is absurd, because thesedogs are not single handedly destroying or killing people. They do it with …show more content…
Maybe they were saved from dog fighting or maybe they had abusive owners. What I do know is that the shelter that kept them had a visit from someone associated with animal services the day before the little boy’s attack. Animal services had gone to the shelter because they had learned that certain dogs had not had required updates on their rabbi shots. Rabies can be the main cause of vicious outbreaks from any animal. Although it was not specified in the article “Boy mauled by Pit Bulls talks about his attack” if the dogs that attacked this child were up-to-date with their rabies shots, even if they were, I am still a die-hard believer that these dogs were rescued from a home that included violence to those particular dogs. Cops are starting to train Pit Bulls as police dogs instead of the traditional German Shepherds. Of course, there are opposing sides from victims who had been attacked by this breedand who blame the breed instead of the owners. From the article “Pit Bulls trained as service dogs” Colleen Lynn noted, “It’s how they attack that makes them so dangerous,” and said, “Mostdogs bite and release, but not the Pit Bull. They latch on and shake their head to inflict maximumdamage.” On the other side of things, from the same article, Stacey Coleman, executive director of Animal Farm Foundation, disputes the belief that Pit Bulls are innately ferocious. “That's simply not true.” she said, and referred to it as an ‘urban legend’.
