The Pit and the Pendulum suggests a negative connotation, and dusky tone that makes the reader question mental aspects of life. While “Pit” being an unusual story that evokes death without anyone suffering real death gives the idea of immortality. Immortality is the idea of eternal life. This idea is being hinted in this context. (There was a discordant hum of human voices! There was a loud blast as of many trumpets! Poe 20) By representing an afterlife based on the light, and hum of human voices this presents the idea of an altered mental state. Immortality is the quality or state of being immortal and the condition of being exempt from death or annihilation. Immortality is thus perpetual life after death, but especially the survival of the soul after death. Many religions believe in the idea of immortality after death, but many believe this idea can be achieved through mind alterations. This physiological idea has been presented in many movies, and books and often has a deeper metaphorical edge. Scientifically this has been studied, and is called mind uploading which is artificial intelligence that can genetically alter your state of mind. (“But the alteration stopped not here- I neither hoped nor desired it to stop”, Poe 19) Poe is briefly giving a hint of his mental state he is perceived to being going on a mental “trip”, and is having somewhat an enjoyable time.
