The film adaptation of The Pit and The Pendulum, and the story itself are similar although they have different storylines. Roger Corman portrayed similar content in his film as Edgar Allen Poe did in his story. The mood, characterization, and tone was what made the two alike. The Roger Corman film adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s Story, “The Pit and the Pendulum” is artistically valid even though the film’s story line bares little resemblance to the original work.…

You will be psychological damage if you know you are trapped in a small pitch black room and you will be suffocated. The pit represents hell or death, because it is a frightening and depressing. The dungeon was made to cause psychological damage more than physical damage, It had a pit in the middle, a pendulum that swings and every in every swing the pendulum descends, and a heated metal wall that will close and cause you to fall in the pit. If it was me i would have passed out but the narrator showed us that his character was smart and found ways to escape like for example when he used grease to make the rats eat the strap out and when he was using geometry to see how the room was.…

The table was made of wood and had brown stains from the blood, and bodily fluids that the Pendulum’s victims had no choice but to let out. The torture device had the tendency to leave splinters in one’s hands, and smelt strongly of urine. I heaved the oddly heavy man onto the table, and let out a loud sigh, my body hardly ever endures such physical exertion. I stopped. I was once here, I almost felt the slicing pain of the dull pendulum.…

Although every room was exquisitely designed, each room represented one of the seven deadly sins. Greed, wrath, pride, lust, gluttony, sloth, and envy all “attended” the party through the guests and their oblivious actions. The infamously painted black room with window panes of “a deep blood color” was the most avoided (Poe 1). With red lighting, as well, this room was highly evaded throughout the night. What was special about this room was that it included a large ebony clock with a pendulum, much like the one from Poe’s other short story called “The Pit and the Pendulum.”…

Mary McCarthy, an American author, once said: “We all live in suspense from day to day; in other words, you are the hero of your own story.” This means, each day everyone wakes up and they do not know what is going to happen, but at the end of each day they have written a story about that day and what has happened. The English III classes read “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe; these stories were written during the Dark Romanticism period. These stories were both on the dark side which leads the characters to do somethings that were a little unusual and they are not sure how everything is going to turn out. Each author uses these stories to build suspense and ambiguity throughout…

With closed eyes, senses of perception, direction, vision, have been stripped away. Poe’s rhetoric remains, the sole survivor of complete sensory deprivation. With his writing techniques, a prevalent exigence is born: Poe aims to convey the effects of pessimistic reasoning on physicality. Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” portrays the ultimate desolation and revival of thought-processes, emphasizing catalysts of mood, legato, diction. Poe establishes the mood within the story’s first moments: moribund, anguished, sightless.…

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Pit and The Pendulum” conveys the dark romantic convention of isolation. The writers during the dark romantic time period especially liked to use isolation to enhance the fear of the character and thus the readers fear for what is to come as the story progresses. In this scene it shows that the narrator, main character, is isolated from the rest of humanity, “The agony of suspense grew at length intolerable, and i cautiously moved forward… I proceeded for many paces; but still all was blackness and vacancy. ”(Poe 252-253).…

This proves he is smart because he can figure out where he is by feeling around. The last of these many adjectives that describe the character from the “The Pit and the Pendulum” would be scared or hopeless. He shows his fear by saying that dying in the pit would be better than dying any other way the guards wanted him to die. The quote from the story proves how scared he is “I struggled no more, but the agony of my soul found vent in one loud, long, and final scream of despair.”…

The wind ruffled the leaves as Edgar walked through the woods. He noted that, in comparison to the sun’s radiant heat, it was a refreshing breeze. He stopped in his tracks, stood up straight, and took in the sights and sounds and smells of the forest. Edgar was fond of his pattern of absorbing everything around him, and then focussing in on a single detail that he found interesting in that moment. Edgar felt godlike whenever he viewed his environment as a whole.…

In “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” the narrators are caught with the murder, but in “The Cask of Amontillado” he is not caught. One of the more contrasting stories of Edgar Allan Poe’s is “The Pit and the Pendulum”. Although this narrator is also unreliable, it is because of different reasons. This narrator has been drugged and is the one that is supposed to be killed. Even though readers cannot take his word because he has been drugged, he does not seem to be unhinged like the narrators in the other stories.…
