Some of the archetypes represented are the good mother, a negative animal, shadow figure, and the trickster. The good mother is Tia Dalma, the bad animal is the Kraken, the shadow figure is Barbossa, and the trickster is Jack Sparrow. Tia Dalma would be the good mother in Pirates of the Caribbean. Tia Dalma is the person who Will Turner, Jack and Jack’s crew go to for help on their journey in the second film. They are looking for a ship called the Flying Dutchman and Tia Dalma shows them where to find it. The good mother “often gives the hero particular objects to help on the journey” (Seger, 392). In the beginning of the film, Davy Jones marks Jack with the black spot and sets the Kraken loose so it will find Jack and send him to Davy Jones’s Locker. The shadow figure in Pirates of the Caribbean is Barbossa. The shadow figure “helps the hero on the journey [and] other times this figure opposes the hero” (Seger, 393). Tia Dalma could be considered the good mother and the Kraken is clearly the negative animal in the series. Barbossa is the shadow character because he changed from being Jack’s enemy, to being Jack’s allie. Last but not least, Jack represents the trickster in this movie along with being the hero.

Movie producers create the character as one of two types of rebels, either the man who starts the movie masculine and transforms into a rebel, or the foolish, powerless man who becomes masculine by going against society. The movie Rambo portrays the first type of insurgent, played by Sylvester Stallone, known for his masculinity in Rocky. Rambo comes out of retirement to join a group of mercenaries fighting the Burmese army with the goal of rescuing multiple Christian missionaries. Stallone, the ideal image of masculinity through his physique and bravery, barley changes his image in this movie because he has already proven himself as the epitome of manliness. On the other hand, Johnny Depp, a skinny man with long hair, plays the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, and he demonstrates his masculinity in ways other than brute force.…

For instance, in the film When Harry Met Sally, the various stages of the social penetration theory become apparent. In the film, while Sally and Harry initially disliked each other after accidentally meeting after a long term, through self-discloser the two become friends.…
