Bands of young and angry adults were led by Boyah and Garaad Mohammed into a large Somali piracy movement. Because of Puntland’s state, it was perfect for the early modern pirates to train and store. Surprisingly, the state was free from islamist groups, or organized gangs, leaving the pirates to their own devices. Although there are many legends of pirates, Somalia’s history on early pirates has not been clearly outlined yet, due to the fact that many of the pirate attacks, present and early, are not reported by the ship owners. The modern day pirates have already been inspirations for myths, just like their early predecessors.
Most of the pirates are in their mid-twenties, but in terrible health. Many of them have rotten teeth, and bloodshot eyes. The men usually are small, nothing compared to the Somali militiaman. They come from all kinds of jobs, from a truck driver to a simple fisherman, and all of them hail from poor towns and families. Many come to piracy because the government won't function correctly. Despite their unhealthy physique, the pirates can make $50,000 dollars in just two piracy operations, but most blow all of it off on cars and other luxuries. Some of these pirates will try to treat their hostages with respect, but if they are not given ransom they will end up killing all hostages on the vessel. This is the main reason why most people view pirates as ruthless and money hungry
