As children grow up, they must all endure an awkward phase while leaving their childish ways for the uncertainty of adult life. In this time of change, they will look back on the highs and lows of adolescence, some memories riddled with the pain of first love and shame many experiences. Throughout the novel Charles Dickens brings the readers into the life of Pip, an innocent child who is thrown into a world of corruption and snobbery. Pip is troubled with the responsibilities of adulthood and must decide between his impoverish roots or the tempting world of the wealthy. During his early life Pip lived in Kent, England with his abusive sister Mrs Joe and her husband Joe Gargery. His childhood experiences are not what most may call happy. …show more content…
This seemed like a god sent opportunity for Pip to escape, but in fact, it would be the beginning a long and painful journey of rejection for him. Upon arrival he meets a girl named Estella who will become his greatest joy and pain, she is groomed by Miss Havisham to break hearts of young men in attempt to get some closure for her own past heart break. He would become the perfect tool for Miss Havisham’s revenge plot but by doing so, she will unintentionally harm Estella in the process. In the novel Great Expectations there is a consistent theme of innocence removed by those we trust the most. Dickens puts the naivety of childhood and the selfishness and self-centeredness of adult hood against one another as we watch Pip struggle to find where his loyalty lays.

In the early 1800s children were treated as little adults, years of adolescence were not something to look back at or miss, if we were to compare today’s kids to those back then you would find that they were probably more serious than our kids. When they were deemed old enough children would the shipped up to become factory workers, those experiences were sure to knock out the care free child like spirt any kids naturally possess.
