Analysis of Pinoy Henyo
Have you ever wondered or even tried to read someone’s mind? Actually, all people read minds everyday. Although it’s physically impossible to actually reach out into the minds of others, people tend to constantly guess until they reach their objective. And by doing so, people tend to look for hints or clues that would draw them nearer to the door of other people’s mind—or at least into what they are thinking. This is a frequent habit of people since having to know or at least be aware of the thoughts or feelings of others enables them to adjust their actions or behavior on certain instances. It requires the ability to search for contextual clues that would help to infer a certain concept or idea. This applies to the well-known Filipino game, Pinoy Henyo, which is popularized by a popular TV variety show. It is actually a fun and entertaining game to be played with friends, family or even with classmates. It is a game wherein one has to guess the word shown only to the other person or an audience by only asking them with questions answerable only with "yes", "no", or "can be” within a given time limit. The goal of the game is simple—being able to guess the word correctly, but not as simple as getting to the goal. If looked through a wider view, Pinoy Henyo is actually a game of correctly guessing a certain word out of millions of words in the dictionary within only just a minute or so. It’s crazy to think of it that way and to wonder how it’s even possible. In fact, some words may lead to a variety of meanings. This raises misperceptions to the player that would be answering the questions of the guesser. For example, the word “McDonalds” could either mean the restaurant, the character, or the food. The word “basketball” could either mean the game or the ball itself. It can be seen that the given words can be fit into a lot of categories. This leads to some players having different answers to the same question of the guesser for the reason that they may be thinking of a different meaning to the same word. This makes it difficult and somehow confusing for the one who will be guessing the word.
Sometimes, people tend to only look at the extreme definitions of a certain concept. For an instance, if the guesser asks if the word that is to be guessed can be described as “big” then the other player would say no, the guesser would then tend to think of something that is small. What if the word that is to be guessed cannot actually be described as neither big nor small, but rather as either short or long? This is a common problem that could mislead the guesser in guessing the
