The herald is a significant archetype in Jack’s journey, which not only signals the call to adventure, but provides the hero inspiration to continue. Jack’s herald is not a human being but a creative form of symbolism pertaining to the doll Pinocchio. After stumbling around the streets of New York City Jack is approached by a young boy who gives him a Pinocchio doll. However, earlier in the film regarding Jack’s conversation with Edwin he jeeringly mentions the story of Pinocchio as a false fallacy. Furthering, the story of Pinocchio is in itself a hero’s journey in which Pinocchio is reborn in accordance to passing through a whale.
