Who is a Waterloo Student?
University of Waterloo is undoubtedly one of the most renowned institutions in Canada, famous for its brilliant faculty of mathematics nurturing thousands of talents. Founded in 1956 by professor Ralph Stanton, the faculty grew immensely and various traditions have formed over the years (“Stanton, Ralph G. fonds”). Arguably the most recognizable symbol that existed since the birth of the faculty is the legendary pink tie; which is a symbol recognized by the university and embodies the meaning of a Waterloo math student.

Hundreds of new math students are joined together for math orientation to kick start their university journey, and the pink tie occurs several times in this process. Firstly, there exists the tie guard. The tie guard is a group of mathematics students that protect the huge pink tie on the M3 building, making sure it stays safe. Waterloo does this to show new students that the pink tie should be treasured and that mathematics students values this. Secondly, the legend of the pink tie is told to all students. In the past, the pink tie has been stolen, destroyed, and torn apart due to weather conditions. However, the university and the math faculty always replaced the tie with a new and improved one to show math students that the history of the faculty will always stand. Since the pink tie is the symbol of the faculty, it symbolizes how students should always preserver, and to come back ever stronger after difficult situations. Thirdly, waterloo incorporates the pink tie into the orientation activities, such as dodge ball with a pink tie. And finally, at the end of orientation, after a math student finishes orientation, they earned their own pink tie to take home to represent the faculty what the tie …show more content…
The pink tie is the logo for the math society, profile picture for waterloo social accounts (ie: Twitter), and occurs on the official website. The university understands that the internet is an important part of a student’s life, and thus using the tie for online symbols makes it more relevant to students. The math society effectively uses the math tie because this symbol is well known to all math students, and thus all math students would instantly recognize this, and trust the source. Furthermore, logos are generally to represent historical meaning and implications (Gilliken). This parallels to how universities show their emblem/seal of the institution, the purpose of seals is to “make something official” and this can parallel to how the pink tie made the math faculty “official” because the professor to help start it wore
