Pink Brain Blue Brain Personal Statement

When I was 12 years-old, I began reading a book by Lise Elliot entitled “Pink Brain, Blue Brain” and, simultaneously, began fostering my love for neuroscience. The idea that what makes every human individual could be boiled down to a precise science using was both terrifying and incredibly intriguing. Upon speaking with my uncle, who is currently working in developing a cure for Parkinson’s disease, I realised neuroscience is the ideal career for me.

In high school, I have further pursued my interests by taking courses relevant to my ultimate goal of becoming a neuroscientific researcher. AP Psychology gave my ideas of studying neuroscience direction, as I learned in which areas I am interested. Taking AP Computer Science helped me realise how the brain itself functions similarly to a computer and taking

These experiences lead me to better grasp an understanding of the fact that there are usually many approaches to a topic, and although one approach may seem perfectly clear to myself, others may struggle with it. Learning effective communication with those several years younger than me has also enabled me to gain better control of communication overall, a skill which will aid me both socially and academically.

Because I was born in Canada to German parents, moved to Germany shortly thereafter, and currently live in the United States of America, I believe I provide a unique and diverse viewpoint that would aid me in my university career. The notion of expanding my horizons and continuing my education in England is entirely enticing and I feel I have the potential to succeed not only academically but also in my future career. I hope the enthusiasm for expanding my knowledge on the brain and pursuing a neuroscience degree will lead me to realise this

As I was reading “Health Agenda for the 21st Century”, I felt amazed at how there have been so many technological advances and improvements that were made in the 21st century for the betterment of people’s health. For example, before technology, one of the only ways to investigate brain function was to open up the skull and physically probe into the brain. However the proper technology is now available to accurately localize essentially every part of the brain without opening the skull. “By following the changes in blood flow and chemical activity that accompany neural activity, it is possible to map the areas involved when, for instance, the subject looks at something, hears a word or experiences pain or pleasure” (page 204). Within the next 10-15 years, methods like these are likely to bring about new knowledge of the functional anatomy of the human brain, making it possible to better understand how a normally functioning brain is disturbed in conditions such as dyslexia, epilepsy, motor dysfunctions, and other mental illnesses.…

INTRODUCTION The human brain has a remarkable ability to manage the body functions, and process the information that allows us to act on a changeable external environment. To achieve these functions, during evolution, it developed a large computing power, and specialized functions, such as cognition, emotion and consciousness. With approximately 86 billion neurons (Herculano-Houzel, 2009), each neuron has approximately hundreds up to thousands of synapses, it has high structural complexity, and non-linearity, that endows with a rich dynamic. It is also a physical system composed of neurons that communicate with each other through electrical discharges.…
