Pine-Col's Corrosiveness

Decent Essays
My experiment is the Corrosiveness of Soda vs. Household cleaner. (Coca-Cola vs. Pine-Sol). The common use for soda is for drinking. The common use for Pine-Sol is cleaning. Would the cleaning agent be a stronger cleaner for the pennies or would the active ingredients in soda be more potent?
Soda contains carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, and caffeine. The ingredients of Pine-Sol include water, C10-12 alcohol ethoxylates, glycolic acid, fragrance, caramel, dimethicone/silica/ PEG distearates, sodium C14-17 secondary alkyl sulfonate, and xanthan gum.

Introduction: For this lab, the two main topics are surface tension and pennies. Pennies are a part of the US currency, which holds a value of one cent. They were mostly made by copper until 1982 when the government realized the expenses of using copper; thus, the composition was changed to 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper or copper plated zinc. It has a diameter of 19.05 mm and a thickness of 1.52 mm and is forged using four procedures: Blanking, Annealing, Upsetting, and Striking. The design of the penny holds two alternative sides (heads or tails) which has a picture of Abraham Lincoln engraved on one end and a variety of pictures engraved on the other end (usually the white house).…

Two of Alka Seltzer’s ingredients, Citric Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), were both placed into a beaker to see if both contents could cause a potential reaction. The final result was a non- occurring reaction. For a second test, both the Citric Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate were placed into separate, dry beakers.…

For this experiment, a group was employed by the Environmental Protection Agency as analytical chemists. Their goal was to identify an unknown compound that has been discovered in a landfill in their hometown. Once they identified the compound, they would then have to determine both the chemical and physical properties of the compound in order to inform the townspeople of any potential dangers. During the first week of lab, the group was given a small bottle containing an unknown white crystal-like substance.…

Parana Pine: For the Parana Pine I obtained the published value from a website since the values on the lab sheet didn’t have a values for Parana Pine. Firstly, I calculated my own Young’s Modulus Value with the result got from the tests using the equation for Young’s Modulus in Bending: E= l³/(4bd^3 ) x ( Δw)/( Δx) From using this equation, I achieved 14.44 E/GPa as a value, the published value, was: 11.37 E/GPa found on ‘The Wood Database’. The difference between my results and the Published values is: 3.07, and it was still within the range of the published value. Regarding the accuracy of the test, since this was my first time conducting this type of test, there may have been some mistakes I made that could have affected the results…

In 2006, the brang celebrated its 75th anniversary. Alka-Seltzer itself is made up of three main ingredients: Aspirin, citric acid, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). When sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) dissolves in water, it splits up and leaves sodium and bicarbonate. The bicarbonate reacts with hydrogen from the citric acid to form carbon dioxide and water. This is what you see when you drop a tablet into a glass of water; it dissolving and CO2 bubbles going up to the surface.…

In this unit of my 9th grade Physical Science, we are learning and experiencing with labs. In this week's experiment, my class did the paper towel lab. Here, we tested the quality of three different paper towel brands, Viva, Up&Up, and Bounty. Each lab group was testing for a certain quality of each brand, such as strength and absorbency. Through different experiments, each lab group came to the conclusion that one paper towel brand had more strength or better absorbency than the other two.…

In the experiment, I tested how soapy water would affect the amount of droplets the penny can hold. The results of my experiment show that the penny holds less droplets of soap water. When the soap is added to the water, the soap collides with water breaking down the tension. As a result, it harder for the droplets to hold together. To find whether my hypothesis was right, I did several of trials to figure out whether my hypothesis was correct.…

We put a penny in each cup and put the substances on the pennies to see what would happen. Vinegar made the penny almost spotless and salt and vinegar made the penny clean and also a slight crystallization. The hydrogen peroxide made the water green and crystallizes a little bit. From this experiment I learned that the vinegar chemically altered the penny’s appearance by cleaning it. The salt couldn’t clean the penny by itself because it probably needed a liquid for it to work.…

The experiment that I will be conducting focuses on how fast one tablet of Alka seltzer can dissolve in various temperatures of water. The core of this procedure is to determine the impact that temperature has on how fast something dissolves. My hypothesis for this experiment would be that the Alka Seltzer that dissolves the fastest would be the one that was placed in the water with the highest temperature. There will be controlled and manipulated variables explained throughout the experiment. The two main things used in this experiment will be the solute and the solvent, which is Alka Seltzer and water.…

Discussion: The hypothesis stated that as the amount of baking soda increases, the total time of its reaction with vinegar will be increased as well. However, that was not the case during the actual experiment. As discussed previously, the results followed a small pattern but not for the whole experiment. The results can be confirmed that are very reliable, since repeated trials were done, sometimes more than three.…
