Flashfloods can wreak havoc within seconds to hours after the onset of a storm. Due to the rapidly increasing water levels which flow with a devastating swiftness, flash floods can be deadly. When flash floods are compounded with an urban area in which much of the surface area is impermeable streets and buildings, runoff occurs rapidly because water is unable to sink into the ground. Additionally, mountainous areas are also very susceptible due to steep topography, which funnels water into canyons and gullies. If people or animals are caught in a low spot in a mountainous area it can be extremely dangerous. Flooding causes more deaths in the US than any other weather-related hazard except sever heat, which greatly impacts Pima County (Guido, 2008). The number of heat-related fatalities is difficult to calculate due to the immense number of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border and are thus unrecorded (Keim et al., 2006). However, heat stroke can affect anyone who is unable to adequately take care of themselves in extreme heat. Although tourists often face the repercussions of heat related illness due to their lack of knowledge, more often it is low-income and underrepresented people who are most impacted. Socioeconomic Stratification The latest estimates for Pima County were pulled from a five-year survey from 2011 through 2015. The average family size consisted of 3.2 people and 62% of the households were families. Families that consisted of married couples were 71% and they ran the household together. The other households had 9% ran by the male and 21% ran by the female (“Pima County, Arizona Demographics Data”, n.d). In the households, 28.6% speak a language at home that is not English. The median household income is 46,162 dollars for the year. The per capita income during 2015 was 25,729 dollars. Within the population, 18.6% of the people were in poverty (“Quick Facts - Pima County, Arizona”, n.d). Within the age group 25 years and older, 87.6% of them had a high school graduation or higher. In the same age group, 30.3% of them had obtained a bachelor's degree or higher (“Quick Facts - Pima County, Arizona”, n.d).
