As Tameka watches the news, she is upset at the starkness and plainness of the children’s hospital rooms at her local hospital. With the idea to bring color into the children’s lives, she starts Project Pillowcase.
Junior Tameka Judson and her friends have started Project Pillowcase, a project designed to create colorful pillowcases for children at the hospital. The project started after Tameka watched the news over winter break and was inspired to help the children in the hospital.
After the idea of creating the pillowcases popped into Tameka’s head, she contacted local businesses to donate money for materials and supplies to help get the project started. Tameka hopes that the patterns and colors will help brighten up the children’s hospital rooms.

“This has been an absolutely wonderful project at the hospital,” said hospital administrator Doug Lent. “I had no idea how much a pillowcase could mean to a little child. I see children all over the hospital clutching their special pillow. The parents also are grateful. These girls care so much, and it shows in what they do and how they present the gifts.” Each child is allowed to pick out their own pillowcase. One four year old girl named Sara picked a pillow with bunnies and carrots on it and named her pillow ‘Whiskers.’ During rough times, ‘Whiskers’ was always there to comfort Sara. “When Tameka knocked on our hospital door and asked if she could give Sara a pillowcase, I had no idea what kind of impact it would have,” said parent of Sara Valeria Gallegos. “Tameka was right. Color did make a difference for Sara.” Seven girls are currently making the pillowcases right now, but many more have asked to join. Tameka’s goal is to make more than 1,000 pillowcases for hospitalized children before she goes off to
