Evaluation When performing the experiment, the pill bugs were generally unresponsive, and many stayed in the same place throughout the whole experiment. Outside of this, no major problems occurred while performing the experiment. If the experiment were to be performed again, more of the IV (baking soda, rubbing alcohol, etc.) would be added to produce a more pronounced effect on the pill bugs, as most pillbugs did not move at all. The results are mostly trustworthy and accurate, as the data is backed up by the research done prior to the experiment. Conversely, more trials could have been performed as experiments with living organisms tend to need a larger sample size.…
My hypothesis was that pill bugs would be more attracted to a warmer environment in comparison to a colder one. However, the results of my experiment refute my claim. Initially I thought that the pill bugs would be naturally drawn to the warmer temperatures due to the fact that pill bugs are cold-blooded and need heat to survive but, for this experiment that was not the case. On average, there were 7 isopods in the cold chamber and 2 in the warm one. At the most there were 8 isopods in the cold chamber, whereas in the warm chamber, there was at the most 4.…
It focused on their response to different types of living space and which they would consider as a more preferable home. Specifically, it sought to explore the question as to which type of material, hard or soft, would the pill bugs find more comfortable. Pill bugs, or Armadillidium vulgare, are crustaceans with adaptations that allow it to survive in a terrestrial lifestyle in comparison to marine isopods. John Cloudsley-Thompson, along with other researchers, observed these adaptations, specifically their walking legs. These flat appendages allow them to crawl upwards on surfaces against the push of gravity, making them efficient climbers.…
Environmental Effects on Pillbug Behavior Catherine Liapes October 14, 2015 AP Biology- Pd.9 Mr. Angus Introduction: Before conducting this lab, I researched information on pillbugs and learned that pill bugs are commonly found in damp environments such as piles of leaves, or under logs. Although they are crustaceous, they can still spend their entire lives on land. They are about ¾ inch in length with seven pairs of legs, and multiple antennae. Pillbugs are nocturnal and mainly consume rotting vegetation.…
Background: Isopods, or what are often called pill bugs, are crustaceans. Isopods live in damp environments. They can be found under rocks, logs and in soil. In this lab, 10 isopods were given a choice between salt water or regular water chambers to test their preference. The results were recorded every 30 seconds over a period of 10 minutes.…
Pill bugs name is woodlouse. Climate change will have an effect on animals, plants, and humans. With climate change rising many animals are going to get extinct in the future. Pill bugs are small animals that can live under rocks, and when you catch one they always tend to rolled up into a small ball. Their body temperature has to match with the environment that they live on.…
The pill slider is a pill organizer that has a slide attached that transports the medication from one compartment to a final compartment. With a simple tug on a latch your medication falls into your hand through a secret compartment. There will be labels on their compartments to discern the days of the week. . This invention is to help people that are vision impaired and to show where their pills go without putting them in the wrong place. It also helps people who have arthritis, so instead of them having to open the container to get the pills the latch will help.…
Pill Bugs: An experiment Introduction Pill bugs are very small and can be found anywhere. Under rocks, in between cracks, in your science class; they are everywhere! However, it is common knowledge that pill bugs do not like to be in open spaces. There are just too many dangerous possibilities, and they don’t need to take the risks. In this experiment, we tested to see if light affected the decisions of where pill bugs like to stay.…
The middle class back in the 1960s was not opposed to the ideal fact of poor black women substancing a birth control pill to stop them from having children. The argument for this time was the middle class wanted them not to take the pill, The counter argument that African American women at the time questioned by the authorities were that they were afraid if the whites made them take birth control pills than they control how many kids they are having. One article reads “ Under slavery, African American women were encouraged to have children to increase a plantations owner’s wealth. After the Civil War, when African Americans were no longer valuable property, the view among white supremacists abruptly shifted. It became desirable to decrease…
We all know people use drugs to escape reality or to have a good time but in reality it’s a killer. Party drugs are usually hallucinogens such as LSD or ecstasy and stimulants like cocaine, weed and amphetamines. Drug use happens everywhere especially at parties or concerts and it can be very dangerous, leading to violence and/or death. According to a survey from the Drug Info website 10.9% of Australians aged 14 years and over have used ecstasy one or more times in their life.…
Not only do they eat them, they eat them extremely aggressively. I actually am guilty of this one. I may be small, but I like to eat, and I eat a lot. When I am really hungry, I eat quickly and I guess you could say aggressively. I am said to eat “like a zombie” when I do…
Contraception on Both Sides of the Debate Birth control has been a controversial topic in the U.S. since the early 1900s. This topic has caused a divide in many religious groups on whether it is moral or immoral. I feel very strongly about this subject and have decided to learn about it in greater depth from both sides of the issue. There are many negatives to birth control and many positives as well.…
As humans in society, having a child has always been a dominant issue in women 's’ lives. A child is a commitment and if unwanted can be a curse upon a woman for the rest of her life. The amount of effort from going to school and work can be stressful enough, adding a baby on top of that could impact a woman’s life in a way that may consume her will to work or go to school. Birth control, at least the pill, has not been readily available for single women up until the recent decades. Birth control can reduce the chance of a woman conceiving a child, some methods more effective and intrusive than others.…
In Christopher Morley's poem "Nursery Rhymes for the Tender Hearted", the speaker wonders about a cockroach he spots running through the pantry. "Roaches", by Peter Wild, has a similar subject matter, where the speaker spots a cockroach in the bathroom, kills it, then reflects on the bug. Each poem suggests a very different impression of the cockroach: Morley's is a sweet, innocent child, while Wild's is dangerous, unwanted predator. The ideas between these poems are fairly similar however, the tone of them are completely different. For example, both of the poems have a couple lines about this bugs antennae.…
Birth control is a controversial issue when it concerns teenagers, who we often consider as children. As of 2014, teenage pregnancy rates are at an all-time low in America- but the United States still has the highest teen birth rate in the industrialized world. (U.S Department of Health and Human Services). The use of contraceptives has served to decrease the rate of teenage pregnancy, but there are still restrictions on young girls, who are forbidden in purchasing their own products. Despite the risk, birth control helps to develop responsibility in young teens, it is much safer than the alternative, and it is effective.…
