Introduction
A pilgrimage is a journey a pilgrim makes to a sacred place for the purpose of honouring it and ultimately becoming closer to God. All religions have a ‘place of religious significance’ and so pilgrimages are important to all religions, not just Catholicism. Catholics want to honour God and show veneration by going on pilgrimages, most often to Rome where the early Church was founded, and where many saints are buried. The process of pilgrimage has been put in place to allow people to develop their spirituality, understanding of their religion and their own personal faith. Other people go on pilgrimages for religious reasons, such as the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in order to seek clarity regarding numerous issues or to learn methods of meditation. Pilgrimages bring participants closer to God, as Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me” (John 14:6). The Catholic Church is always accepting and supporting and so encourages people to make pilgrimages to many of the special holy places. The World Youth Day pilgrimage is a gathering of youth which offers pilgrims the freedom of social structure. Pilgrimages like
